In anticipation of the live 65th Annual Emmy Award broadcast on CBS this Sunday, BWW will be spotlighting the Emmy nominated TV performances of some of Broadway's biggest stars. Today, we take a look back at the career of Alec Baldwin, including his Academy Award nominated role in THE COOLER, his record breaking run on SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE, his hilarious run on 30 ROCK, and his Tony-nominated turn on Broadway.
While Alec Baldwin first came to prominence as both a daytime and Primetime soap opera actor, he is, through-and-through, a movie star. As the most successful of the dashing Baldwin Brothers, he has starred in such films as BEETLEJUICE, PRELUDE TO A KISS (for which he was nominated for Drama Desk Award, when it was an Off-Broadway play), the film adaptation of David Mamet's GLENGARRY GLENROSS, Aaron Sorkin's MALICE, as the narrator in THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS, THE AVIATOR, and THE DEPARTED. He was nominated for an Academy Award for his supporting role in 2003's THE COOLER.
Though before 30 Rock he hadn't been a regular on a series since KNOTS LANDING, Baldwin has been a regular on shows, including WILL AND GRACE, for which he was twice nominated for a Guest Acting Emmy, and SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE, where he holds the record for hosting 16 times. Alec won an Emmy as Jack Donaghy twice, in 2008 and '09, and has won eight straight Screen Actors Guild Awards and three Golden Globes for the role. After his successful podcast on WNYC, HERE'S THE THING, it has been announced that Baldwin will have his own weekly talk show on MSNBC, beginning in October.
Alec, a devoted patron of the arts, has been a regular in the New York theatre community for the past three decades. He began his career in 1986's LOOT and was a Tony-nominee for 1992's revival of A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE, which was turned into a TV movie, for which he was nominated for an Emmy and Golden Globe. He most recently appeared on Broadway earlier this year in the troubled production of Daniel Sullivan's ORPHANS.
The 65th Primetime Emmy Awards telecast will air live coast-to-coast on Sunday, September 22nd (8 PM ET/5 PM PT) on CBS from the NOKIA Theater L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles. And be sure to visit BWW TVWorld for live coverage of the 2013 Primetime EMMY AWARDS.
Like in the Jeff Daniels videos posted earlier today, Alec Baldwin's videos below contain a bit of profanity; which should surprise no one familiar with Baldwin. In the first video, a group of super fans discuss the actor's best lines on NBC's 30 ROCK. Next is a hilarious scene with Baldwin, Michael Keaton, and Geena Davis from BEETLEJUICE. The Following clip is from Alec's legendary "pep talk" to his salesmen in the film adaptation of David Mamet's GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS. After that is one of his most popular Saturday Night Live skits, "NPR's Delicious Dish." Next, we see Alec and Russell Brand get very close as they duet on "Can't Fight This Feeling" from the film version of ROCK OF AGES, and finally, we have a scene from his Academy Award nominated role in THE COOLER.
