Nothing says romance more than a bed & breakfast. Cute homes, delicious food, a real feel of being at home while being on vacation. Bed and breakfast's make even better prisons, especially when that prison holds gorgeous vampires trying to flip the humanity switch of their best friends. This week's episode of THE VAMPIRE DIARIES, entitled "Because," was charged with emotion, misplaced motherly instincts, and truths flying every witch (terrible pun intended) way.
Stefan conspired with Damon and Elena to turn Caroline's humanity back on by luring her into a charming B&B so they could munch on all the staff. Damon had popped in to use them both as a human dart board, shooting them full of vervain and draining them of all their blood, Stefan partaking to make the plan more convincing.
Bonnie was furious with Damon when he confessed that he had handed the Ascendant over to Lily. A gift of coffee didn't make a difference with the impending takeover of 1903 witchpire's plus the return of Kai.
Elena walked in on Jo and Alaric making a ton of mouth noises, relieving them of their Caroline watch. Caroline sassed Elena about the time she turned off her humanity and almost killed Bonnie, citing that she really was in no position to be so judgmental. Elena blew off Caroline's insults and presented her with the last letter Liz had ever written her. Apparently making photocopies first never crossed their minds because Caroline immediately demanded that Stefan burn the letter. Almost letting his cover slip, Stefan tried to reason with Caroline, but in the end decided to play along and burn the letter in order to keep the ruse going.
Bonnie had decided to have a lunch date with Lily, but Enzo showed up first. Lily finally recognized Enzo, delighted to see him and offering to share a drink. She revealed the night she had turned Enzo was the night the Gemini Coven had captured her and her witchpire friends. Enzo felt a relief, deciding to help Lily when he realized Bonnie was playing her. They returned to the Salvatore mansion where Bonnie had been snooping around, only to find the Ascendant gone. Enzo tried to convince Lily that her real family was in front of her, but it only angered the Salvatore matriarch more.
Elena and Damon conversed about their five-year plan, including ending up in a loft in Tribeca (obviously compelled into by Damon since a 25-year-old in a Tribeca loft was laughable.) Caroline groaned about having to listen to their sweet conversation and taunted Elena even further about her life's desires.
Damon confronted Elena about wanting to be human, riling her up. She did want to be human; she would never be 100% happy with being a vampire, but the prospect of being with Damon forever kept her happy. She wanted to know why Damon was pushing the matter so hard when Lily called, threatening to crush the cure if she didn't get the Ascendant back.
Caroline tried to have some fun with Stefan, but he was insistent that they stay celibate. His heart racing cued her in on the fact that Stefan was faking the entire time, his humanity fully intact. A furious Caroline snapped Stefan's neck, kicking the door of the room down and running off.
Bonnie had decided to finally look out for herself for once and tried to destroy the Ascendant. Damon tried to reason with her, but Bonnie found it hilarious that Lily was leveraging the cure from her own son. She had had enough and forced Damon to admit he didn't want Elena to take the cure; he was scared of Elena becoming human and what it meant for their future. Bonnie making him face the truth was enough to send him away, leaving her with the Ascendant.
Caroline had driven off only to be shocked when she was pulled over by Liz. She freaked out at the site of her dead mother, catching on that it was all just an hallucination put on by Stefan. She woke in the B&B and immediately grabbed a sharp wooden panel, ready to stab Stefan. He begged for her to let it all in, to take his hand, but she was tired of it all and staked Stefan. He forced her to see into his memory of one of the last conversations he had with Liz where she told Stefan how much she shipped him and Caroline. The memory shocked Caroline and she forced herself further in, realizing all she really wanted was to see the letter.
Damon rushed back to the house to find a furious Lily. She threw the cure into the fire at the same time Elena was arriving. A box sat romantically among a bevy of candles. Elena grabbed the box and opened it, stunned at what was inside. Lily knew that all Damon wanted was eternity with Elena and did the one thing he hadn't found the courage to do yet, present Elena with the cure. Elena confronted Damon just as Lily found her time to exit.
Caroline decided she needed to be alone, away front Stefan, while Lily had returned to ripper status and found comfort in Enzo's arms. Elena and Damon mulled over the cure when Damon made the decision that Elena was going to take it and he was going to ingest it right along with her.
Things we need to discuss:
- I'm still not convinced there's not a deeper connection between Lily and Enzo. They way she reacted to seeing him again, happier than seeing her own children, speaks volumes.
- Damon's decision to take the cure with Elena is dreadfully romantic, but we all know Damon would make an awful human. Furthermore, we're still not sure of the ramifications of a vampire of his age taking the cure.
- Enough talk about witchpire's, let's see them in the present trying to navigate the Internet and eating froyo.
- How much did you want Lily to actually destroy the cure?
Do you think Kai has become a witchpire? What is up with Lily and Enzo? Were there actual staff members at that B&B? Comment below or tweet me @enr702 or find me live-tweeting the episodes @erinrlivetweets.
