One time I dreamed that a polar bear named Charles broke into my room, demanded I follow him, and took me on a night of crazy adventures that ended in butterfly tattoos, a pool of chocolate pudding, and a binge watch of every episode of ALF. When I awoke it took me a few minutes to adjust; I couldn't decipher dream from reality, even finding chocolate pudding in my unmentionables. Anyway, what I'm saying is, don't take your dreams lightly. You never know when you may be forced to watch ALF or murder an entire room of loan sharks.
This week's mid-season finale of SUPERNATURAL, entitled "The Things We Left Behind," found Dean dreaming of a room full of slaughtered bodies. Being a dream and all, Dean brushed it off as the Mark of Cain messing with his head. And if there was one person he wasn't going to confide in it was his own brother.
Castiel had been on a guilt trip since Hannah had left him and decided to check on Claire Novack, his vessel's daughter. Claire had been holed up in a youth detention center, or as Castiel referred to it as "child prison." Claire's mother had dropped Claire at her grandmothers while she went to find herself, but that was six seasons ago. If there was one way Castiel could help, it was freeing Claire and taking custody of her. Unfortunately for the duo, even a tie and a Misha Collins voice couldn't save the young girl.
Instead, Castiel decided a jailbreak would suit the situation and took Claire to a local diner where she commented on wanting to punch him in his stupid angel face, but there was something different, softer about this Season 10 Castiel. Although his intentions were good, Castiel couldn't catch a break. Claire pulled one over him and stole his wallet, skipping out on him, and hitchhiking to get away.
In order to help find and save Claire, Castiel called on Sam and Dean. It wasn't a normal call for them, but they would do anything to help their friend. While Sam went to investigate, Dean and Cas were able to have a heart-to-heart. Castiel asked how Dean was and the elder Winchester made Castiel promise to end him if he turned dark again. He wasn't going down the same path as before and he knew his brother would never be able to follow through on such a harsh deed.
Over in Crowley's dungeons, Rowena had been locked up for weeks without seeing her son. Crowley refused to see her and for good reason as Rowena had been a terrible mother. Finally allowing her to grace his presence, though, Crowley voiced his disdain for his mother, his STD-sounding name (Fergus), and for never knowing the real identity of his father. But hey, those winter solstice orgies quite often got out of hand and Rowena couldn't apologize.
Claire had returned to her friend and a man, Randy, that she had been in cahoots with. Unfortunately, Randy owed a lot of debt and the loan sharks were on their way. He recruited Claire to help, giving her the idea and pointers on robbing the local convenience store. But Castiel and the Winchesters had been on Claire's tail and the angel was able to stop her in her tracks before she followed through with any consequential actions. The girl was angry, Randy was more of a father than Castiel was ever going to be, and she returned to help her friends.
Castiel was beside himself. He wasn't sure what to do next and Sam and Dean made sure to help ease the pain of their friend. They even lamented a sweet story of Dean's first rebellious act as a teenager, sneaking out in NYC to CBGB and getting wasted with the locals during a punk show. John had found his son with his dad-senses and the two brothers reminisced how great of a father he had been.
Crowley was tired of Rowena and even thought about allowing one of his demon minions to kill her once and for all. But he couldn't go through with it. He saved Rowena and bade her to follow him. What he was planning next was unknown.
Castiel knew he had to save Claire. In good timing, the threesome showed up to find the loan sharks about to hurt Claire and her friends. Castiel successfully freed the girl, but it was the others that were in trouble. The gang knocked Dean around and all of his memories of his time with the Mark of Cain came rushing back to him. He needed to feed the evil mark and he needed to do it now. As Castiel and Sam helped Claire, Dean went to work and slaughtered the house of sharks, mirroring his dreams and visions. Sam and Cas came running in, the younger Winchester looking into his brother's eyes and demanding he tell him "it was them or you!"
Things we need to discuss:
- I enjoy Dean's darker side. I was a little disappointed when Deanmon only lasted a few episodes and am excited for them to explore the Mark of Cain in depth. Here's to it lasting a good chunk of episodes and not one or two.
- I'm sure Misha Collins vocal cords were thanking him, if only for a few minutes, this episode.
- I'm also glad to know that ketchup is, in fact, a vegetable. When I order extra ketchup packets I'm really asking for another serving of veggies.
