If last week's sob fest wasn't enough to wreck you in the emotions department, this week's episode of THE VAMPIRE DIARIES, entitled "Let Her Go," reminded us, "Hey! We love watching you cry!"
A flashback of younger Caroline asking Liz if she was going to die one day traipsed across the screen as our eyes began to fill with tears not 30 seconds into the episode. At the House of Hunks, Damon was working on his eulogy for Liz, reminiscing once again about his own mother's death, upping Mommy Salvatore's status from probably still alive to definitely still alive. He tried to comfort Caroline, by reminding her that it was the days succeeding the funeral that were the scariest. Caroline decided the best way to keep her mind off her grief would be to allocate all the tasks to her friends and keep a tight order on the funeral.
Bonnie had already made it back from Canada in the 1994 prison world with a super magical rock that would help her find her way back home. She had been breaking bones and doing a ton of magic, sure her new plan wouldn't fail.
Over at Alaric's, Jo was hacking up her insides with the stomach flu when Kai stopped by, sick himself. Except his sickness wasn't of the human variety as he was vomiting blood everywhere, claiming he was defective from the merge and it was also affecting Jo. If Kai was sick and dying then their whole coven was doomed.
Damon was flashing back to the year his mother died, helping little Stefan work through their grief. It was staggering to see their age difference displayed given the few short years later when they would both be fighting over the same woman and turning into vampires. In the present, Stefan confided in Damon about his kiss with Caroline and how he would move forward with her. Caroline, though, was starting to act odd and less emotional when she insisted they stick to the schedule she had drawn out.
Kai had accidentally juice boxed Jo's magic, which made him feel a whole lot better. Kai and Luke were never meant to merge, it was always meant to be Kai and Jo, and Kai needed Jo's magic to revive himself and the future of their coven. It was also conveniently revealed that there wasn't just one prison world, there were many, and if Kai died then all those world's would collapse upon each other. This bit of new information was bad news for Bonnie, who was gearing up to beam herself home, only for it to start snowing on her. The day had suddenly changed.
Elena voiced her concerns over Caroline's method of grieving, which was sadly hilarious given her own past when it came to getting over the loss of a loved one. She tried to give Damon some advice on his eulogy writing and Damon was still heartbroken over the fact that he could never properly articulate his feelings at his own mother's funeral.
Alaric confessed his love to Jo, promising to love her with or without her magic. At the funeral home, Caroline and Stefan shared a moment; he promised her that they would talk once they had gotten through the day and when they weren't standing in front of Liz's open casket.
Bonnie's day was getting even worse when it turned out that not only had the day changed, but so had the year. She had wondered into a house engulfed in the Northern Lights that displayed a journal with the year: 1903.
Matt and Tyler tussled on the steps of the funeral home. Matt wasn't going to let Tyler's baggage and alcohol laden breath ruin Caroline's already horrible day.
Damon was finally able to muster up the niceness he had been dreading and stood in front of Caroline and the residents of Mystic Falls as he eulogized Liz and made everyone's eyes fill with some kind of clear liquid all over again. Even more devastating was Caroline's last, beautiful song she had decided to sing to honor her mother.
Matt confided in Tyler at the grill; he had decided they should take part in a real life 21 JUMP STREET situation and become cops. In the prison world, Bonnie had quickly realized she was chilling in Damon and Stefan's home and she wasn't alone, but was suddenly transported back to 1994 when Jo began to transfer her powers over to Kai. Bonnie quickly ran back to the underground tunnels to complete her trip back home, but at the last minute was face-to-face with a mysterious lady, dressed in 1903 garb, who walked right into the parameters of her spell.
Kai thanked Jo for her magic, but not before whispering in her ear that her sickness was coming from an unexpected pregnancy. Alaric, surprised, proposed to her on the spot. Alaric had already bought a ring and had planned to propose, but there was nothing like an unexpected pregnancy to make the moment right. Alaric was 92% sure he wanted to marry Jo and that was enough for her to say 'yes.'
Elena had popped by Caroline's, certain that her best friend was going to pull an Elena and turn off all her emotions. Caroline was sure her experience would be different and yelled at Elena for judging her choices, even going so far as the snap her neck for getting in the way of her plan.
Damon walked into his kitchen to find Bonnie standing, waiting for him. The two embraced in a touching moment, reunited at last. At the same time, Stefan had arrived at Caroline's to share his feelings, only to find Elena still unconscious and Caroline gone.
Bonnie shared with Damon her video she had caught right before being pulled back into the present, pausing on the mysterious lady's face: Mommy Salvatore.
Things we need to discuss:
- The reveal of Damon and Stefan's mother wasn't a shock given the sheer number of references to her life the boys have made over the past few episodes. The real mystery is why was she being held in a prison world?
- How many prison worlds are there? Will Bonnie be able to join a prison world support group? That said, her and Damon's reunion was perfect.
- I can't wait to see what Kai continues to do with all this power. I hope his newfound emotions stay in tact, as conflicted and semi-emotional Kai has been a real treat. Also a real treat: Kai's newly grown facial hair.
