Mom's can be so embarrassing sometimes. One minute they're trying to set you up with the doctor down the street then they're wiping food off your face with their saliva-covered finger. It's even worse when they're criticizing the way you're doing your job, especially when they're an all-powerful, hundreds of years old witch with a bad case of narcissism.

This week's episode of SUPERNATURAL, entitled "The Executioner's Song," was an epic battle for the Winchesters, culminating in the standoff Dean had been waiting for since obtaining the Mark of Cain.

Over at the prison, Cain was hankering for a murder, choosing a death row inmate as his victim. Sam and Dean were right on his tails as they stopped by the prison to investigate. There were no signs of murder, though, as the inmante, Tommy, had suddenly disappeared with Cain.

Castiel had apparently finished his stint riverboat gambling and was torturing demons for information on Cain. Over in Hell, Crowley was too busy playing video games to listen to his demon minions complain about employee benefits when Rowena gladly interrupted, graphically describing how she would literally cut a Crossroads demon in two. Crowley agreed with his mother, but was still visibly annoyed by her embarrassing presence.

The Winchesters continued tracking Cain down, but Castiel was one step ahead, finding Tommy's remains and coming face-to-face with Cain himself. Cain revealed that he had grown tired of only hunting and killing demons and massacring humans was just as fulfilling.

Rowena had finally voiced her wishes to her son as she asked if Crowley and his minions could help her take down some witches that stood in her way. Crowley scoffed at the request and Rowena quickly laughed off her sons disdain, admitting that she had been manipulating him the whole time.

Sam, Dean, and Castiel learned Tommy had left behind a young son and were afraid Cain would go after him as a precaution. Sam and Castiel were hesitant and tried to talk Dean out his plans, but Dean was raring to go; if he had to kill Cain then he would be ready. Dean only needed one thing: the First Blade, and he would have to go through Crowley to retrieve it. It didn't taken much convincing once the King of Hell learned that he was number one on Cain's most wanted list.

Dean wanted to use Tommy's son as bait as a way to wait Cain out. Crowley showed up, even agreeing with Sam and Castiel that the plan was too dangerous; he wasn't going to hand over the blade until Cain was captured and tied up. Dean voiced his fears to his brother. He had promised he would go down fighting, but even he was surprised the time had come so soon.

Cain appeared and Castiel tried to fend him off, but all his powers did was tussle Cain's flowing hair. Crowley aided by projecting an illusion of Tommy's son, locking Cain up for Dean's next move. Crowley handed the blade over and Dean became visibly stronger as he grasped it in his hand.

Dean and Cain finally came face-to-face with Cain merely unfazed by the Winchesters appearance with the blade. The two began to duke it out, Cain clearly the more powerful of the two even without the blade. Dean tried hard not to succumb to the powers of the mark and the blade, Cain taunting him for it. Cain grabbed the blade from Dean, taking it in one hand with a hold on Dean in the other. Cain assured Dean that his story would end with him killing Sam, Cain's story in reverse. Cain raised his hand to kill Dean, but the elder Winchester grabbed Cain's silver blade and chopped his blad-wielding hand off. Dean swiped the First Blade into his possession and made the weakened Cain promise that he would never be able to stop killing before finishing him off once and for all.

Dean revealed to Crowley he was never really on Cain's radar and his presence was only necessary to obtain the blade. The King of Hell disappeared as Dean fell into Sam's arms, exhausted both physically and emotionally.

Rowena cried out her disappointment in Crowley and his ways of ruling Hell. Over in the bunker, Sam tried to find the upside to Dean's power, but voiced to Castiel that his brother was in trouble.

Things we need to discuss:

- I thought Rowena could have been a really great villain, but all she's proved to be is a tiring character. I hope her speech tonight was a kick in the right direction to add more depth to her characterization and a clearer path for the rest of the season.

- Round of applause for Timothy Omundson (Cain) who gave a brilliant and chilling performance. Let's get him in more things (Season Two of GALAVANT, anyone!?)

How will Dean's slaying of Cain affect the rest of the season? How has your mom embarrassed you? Did you also want to stroke Cain's beard? Comment below or tweet me @enr702 or find me live-tweeting @erinrlivetweets.
