This Easter, you can pair your Sicilian wine with true Sicilian-inspired dishes. We have some information about Easter Traditions and the wine pairings that work so well for Italian fare. Wines of Sicily are ideal for holiday celebrations and everyday menus.
Sicilian Easter Traditions:
· With a predominantly Catholic population, Sicily devotes a lot of time to Easter, similar to Christmas. Sicilians celebrate from Holy Thursday through Easter Monday.
· On Holy Thursday, the whole town comes together to view the Procession of Holy Thursday which reenacts the betrayal of Judas.
· On Good Friday, sad and silent processions of Christ on the cross go through each town, no matter how big or small.
· On Easter Sunday, local farmers decorate the statues of the Mother Mary, the Risen Christ and the Archangel Michael for a reenactment ceremony of the resurrection, ending in celebratory bells, fireworks and applause.
· On Easter Monday, Sicilians celebrate the "Scampagnata di Pasquetta" with a big barbecue in the countryside. At this barbeque, friends and family gather together to cook, eat, drink wines and play games.
Sicilian Easter Wine Pairings:
Cassata is a typical Sicilian sponge cake stuffed with sweet ricotta cheese, covered with a shell of marzipan and topped with candied fruits. During Easter, this dessert can be found on tables all over the island, paired with a glass of Nero d'Avola wine.
Cannileri is a decorated sweet cookie or salty bread with a boiled egg in the middle. Both versions are mainly homemade and a great Easter treat to mix with Nero d'Avola wine.
Fritella is a mix of fresh peas, fava beans and artichokes. This is a popular Easter side dish, paired nicely with a bottle of Nero d'Avola wine.
