The California town of June Lake, located just 15 minutes north of Mammoth Lakes, is known by many for its prime fishing, skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking and other outdoor activities. With the much anticipated re-opening of June Mountain this winter, arguably one of the few things the town is missing is a community focal point where like-minded residents and visitors can trade stories of stellar days spent outside, while at the same time sipping a pint of craft beer. Justin and Sarah Walsh, a husband and wife team who share a love for both the outdoors and craft beer, are looking to change that. On November 5th, the Walsh's will launch their Kickstarter campaign to help fund the build out of their new brewery in the town of June Lake, aptly titled June Lake Brewing (http://www.junelakebrewing.com). The launch of the brewery has already received tremendous local support, with residents offering their help in the June Lake Brewing's initial construction and a recent article in the local Mammoth newspaper, The Sheet (http://thesheetnews.com/2013/10/11/page-2-jlb-moves-one-step-closer/). Once live, the Kickstarter campaign will be available here www.junelakebrewing.com/jlb-kickstarter.html (this link will not have live content until November 5th).
Over the last few years, Justin and Sarah have been refining their craft beer skills while receiving mentoring from the teams at Orange County's Cismontane Brewing and their neighbors at Mammoth Brewing Company, just one town over from June Lake. Avid downhill mountain bikers and snowboarders, the two were year-round visitors to June Lake before picking up stakes and moving to the town at the end of 2012.
While new to the rigors of owning their own brewery, neither of the Walsh's are strangers to the worlds of entrepreneurship and business. After obtaining his MSBA in Entrepreneurship from SDSU in 2008, and prior to moving to June Lake, Justin was the marketing manager for an upstart telecom company, helping to see it through a very successful sale to one of the largest international mobile operators in the world. In addition to Sarah's current career as a logistics specialist for a Fortune 500 company, she has extensive small business experience with San Diego nonprofits.
"While we obviously want June Lake Brewing to be successful, we also want to inspire and give back to the greater community that loves what June Lake has to offer. In addition to brewing some really great beer, we're also going to serve as a staging area for meetings and events where year-round residents and weekend-visitors can meet, trade stories and inspire one another to get outside and enjoy all the different things that make June Lake the most awesomest place ever," commented Justin. "We've been told our beer tastes better after a day spent outside, so our goal is to get as many people as possible active outdoors between when they leave their couch and take a seat at one of our barstools!"
Many consider June Lake to be the hidden jewel of the Eastern Sierras. With Tioga Pass, and the back gate of Yosemite just around the corner, June Lake is an ideal location for skiing, riding, biking, climbing, fishing, hiking, camping, trekking and just about any outdoor activity you can think of. If you follow the ski resort industry, then you may have heard Mammoth Mountain, which purchased June Mountain in 1986, will be re-opening the resort this December after being closed for the previous 2012/13 winter season.
Those that pledge support during the June Lake Brewing Kickstarter campaign will receive such limited edition items as locally handcrafted hats, shirts and mugs, Alpers Trout x JLB collaboration gear, super awesome stainless steel growlers, and in the spirit of Sarah and Justin's good-natured enthusiasm, Hi-5's.
The June Lake Brewing Kickstarter campaign will run until November 29th (Black Friday).
