A new support group for people with dementia is being launched by Alzheimer's Society at the Wyvern Theatre, Swindon. The new Memory Café will provide an opportunity for people with dementia and their carers to socialise and get much needed face to face support.
Derek Aldridge, Theatre Director said: "As always the Wyvern is proud to be at the centre of the local community and we are very pleased to provide a venue for such a worthwhile cause. I do hope that people will enjoy spending time here and benefit from the Memory Café."
Memory Cafes provide people with dementia and carers a platform to talk openly about living with dementia within a relaxed and informal environment. The group will also hear from a variety of guest speakers, including health and social care professionals and representatives from the local community, about topics and services relevant to them.
The Swindon Memory Café at the Wyvern Theatre is being launched on Thursday 13 February 2014 by Robert Buckland MP (South Swindon). He said: "I'm delighted to support the new Memory Cafe at the Wyvern Theatre, and honoured to have been invited to take part in the launch. Alzheimers Society do so much fantastic work for people with dementia and their carers in Swindon, and the Memory Cafe is another excellent initiative. I'm particularly happy that the venue for this service will be the Wyvern Theatre. It continues the long and proud tradition of the Wyvern being at the very heart of the Swindon community. I wish the Memory Cafe every success and look forward to supporting it in the future."
The Memory Café will then be held every second Thursday of each month in the theatre café from 10.30am to 12.30pm. This is a free service.
Rosemarie Thompson, dementia support worker for Alzheimer's Society in Swindon and Wiltshire said: "Alzheimer's Society's Memory cafes can really help improve people's quality of life. They give people with the condition and their carers the opportunity to socialise with others in similar situations and receive vital support. They're also a great source of information and guidance which can help people to live well with the condition. There are over 6,300 people Iiving in Wiltshire and this will rise, but with the right support people can live well with the condition for a number of years."
