In early May, Wines of Greece held their Grand Tasting event at City Winery in New York City. It was a true celebration of the country's diverse winemaking regions. Greece is known as the home of Plato, Aristotle and the Olympics. And almost two thousand years ago, it created a foundation for winemaking and vine growing. Today, wine connoisseurs and wine lovers have the opportunity to explore and engage in the Greek wine culture.
Greece covers an area of about 51,000 square miles, approximately the size of Georgia in the United States. Producers throughout the country are creating wines that are getting global praise. Greek winemakers are focusing on creating delicious wines and growing the grapes that are best suited to the Mediterranean climate, one that is ideal for crops with long dry summers, mild winters and an abundance of sunshine.
We enjoyed sampling some of Wines of Greece's red, white, rose, and sparkling selections. They included Orgion 2015 with Mavrodaphi grapes by Scalvos Winery; Monolithos Nemea 2013 with Agiorgitiko Grapes by Bairaktaris Estate; Plano Malagousia 2016 with Malagousia Grapes by Wine Art Estate; Two Rivers 2015 with Mouhtaro and Merlot Grapes by Samartzis Estate Wine. We were not only impressed by the wines, but the variety of price points, making them very accessible.
