Kids and adults love the seasonal green-colored milkshakes available at many popular fast food chains. And while we all enjoy a treat, there is a healthier version of this frothy beverage.

Founded by Stacey Ornstein, "Allergic to Salad" has taught hundreds of kids, from toddlers to teens, to explore and enjoy healthier food choices through culinary programs that introduce them to new foods and cooking techniques all while engaging them in conversations that reinforce the STEM curriculum and touch on topics such as food sourcing, food identification and food justice.

Currently Allergic to Salad classes are taught at 150 schools throughout Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Manhattan. And they have plans to expand into Staten Island.

For St. Patrick's Day, the kids in the Allergic to Salad program will be learning how to make a "Shamrock" Shake Smoothie." This healthy, yet still delicious, smoothie replaces some of the original ingredients found in other smoothies with nutritious vegetables and fruit.

We have the recipe to share with our readers so you can whip some up at home.

ALLERGIC TO SALAD'S SHAMROCK SHAKE SMOOTHIE

(Makes about 2 cups)

-1 cup whole milk or coconut milk

-1 cup ice

-1 handful of fresh mint leaves OR 2-3 drops of peppermint extract

-2 cups fresh baby spinach (or another dark green)

-¼ avocado peeled

-1 small frozen banana, peeled and sliced

Freeze ripe bananas with peels removed. When ready to make smoothie, remove from freezer. Start by adding ice and liquid to blender, followed by soft fruit. Add greens last. Blend on high for 30 seconds or until smooth. Serve with whipped cream and/or chocolate shavings on top!
