King's Lanes have opened store number 5 and plan on opening many more in the coming months according to Josh Rossmeisel, the company's Senior VP of Operations. They are taking the bowling alley and making it more current for patrons than your dad's bowling league venue so that they have a better experience, come back more often and stay longer when they do.
In the past few years the boutique bowling hall with more of a lounge feel has planted itself firmly in mostly urban locations or high traffic suburban malls next to other busy, edgy restaurant and bar outlets. King's lanes is no exception and they seem to be doing it better than most.
"The self-serve beer tables are a huge hit with our guests. The staff love it as it's a huge talking point and very unique for their guests. Guests love the fact that they can pour their own beer at the table and only pay what they pour," said Rossmeisl.
In a number of their locations they have adopted the pourmybeer self-serve beer systems to accentuate the guest experience, maximize profits and create some buzz. The systems have done all three of these apparently.
The latest addition to their Massachusetts store is a six tap self-serve beer wall in a private room that they open during busy times or for pre-booked parties.
The idea behind the pourmybeer system is that customers don't have to wait for service and in many traditional bowling alleys that seems to be an issue. As these businesses have slowed down they have tried to conserve costs, understandably. However, in doing so, many of these places under-staff and getting a beer either takes a long time or the onus has been placed on the customer to do so. Not wanting to leave the frame they either choose not to have more beer or play less frames. Either way they lose more money and the downward spiral continues.
"We see the bowling channel as a big opportunity for our company," said Declan Duggan, owner and co-founder of pourmybeer.com. "Beer and bowling are synonymous and King's Lanes are the first company that have seen the value in deploying our systems to date but we feel that may change in 2014 as we make a concerted effort there and add dedicated resources for that channel."
It sounds like bowling and pourmybeer will both score this year as a result of the ongoing relationship.
