  • Scientists link extra virgin olive oil, a source of monounsaturated fatty acids, which help maintain the correct levels of cholesterol in the blood, with the reduction of the risk of heart disease

Scientists have concluded that our diet has a determining effect on our health with bad eating habits considered one of the causes of the alarming growth of cardiovascular disease. The FDA accepted scientific evidence suggesting the daily intake of approximately two tablespoons of olive oils could reduce the risk of contracting a coronary disease, thanks to the monounsaturated fat present in olive oil. "To achieve this possible benefit, olive oil has to replace a similar amount of saturated fats and you should not increase the total amount of calories you ingest per day," the FDA says.

Although the FDA clarifies that the evidence of olive oil in reducing the risk of coronary heart disease is still limited, other research, has advanced on the health effects of olive oil consumption.

The "Predimed" study (Spain 2003-2010) confirmed the positive effects of the Mediterranean diet, by helping reduce the incidence of cardiovascular deaths, myocardial heart attacks and cerebral vascular accidents by 30%. It had more than 7,000 volunteers ages 55 to 80, for an average of five years. New results are expected in 2020 and it hopes to show that, encouraged with physical activity and weight loss goals, the reduction of the risk of cardiovascular problems will increase significantly.

A new project

From 2017-2021 scientists at the Center for Biomedical Research in Network-Physiopathology of Obesity and Nutrition, along Harvard University, will investigate how the Mediterranean Diet can help prevent heart failure, fibrillation atrial and peripheral arteriopathy.
