Drink Wine and Become a World Champion

Wine Acuity, LLC, the organization who manages the U.S. Open Wine Tasting Championship, announced this week that they are in search of the 2018 wine tasting team to represent the USA in the World Wine Tasting Championship being held on October 12, 2018 in Chateau Saint-Pierre de Serjac, Languedoc, France.

Wine Acuity is holding the U.S. Open Blind Wine Tasting Competition on August 11, 2018 at the Marina Del Rey Hotel in Marina Del Rey, CA. Teams of two people will taste 6 white and 6 red wines from around the world gaining points by identifying its primary grape, country of origin, region of origin, vintage, and producer. The winners from the U.S. Open in August will become the 2018 Team USA and will represent the country at the World Wine Tasting championship in October. This will be the sixth competition and the fourth including the United States.

Wine Acuity CEO, John Vilja, knows a thing or two about this competition. Mr. Vilja was invited to represent the US in the 2016 Championship after the 2015 team came in dead last. As the 2016 Team USA Captain, he led the team to a third place victory. This is no small feat, as Mr. Vilja explains, "the championship is a blind tasting, and features many varietals that are not common in the US. In fact, they are nearly impossible to find locally."

Mr. Vilja expressed that the competition is not just for professionals and encourages anyone to participate in the regional tournaments. In fact, only one member of the four-member 2016 Team USA had any formal training. "It isn't about being a wine expert. It is about being passionate for wine, and having a desire to represent the US in a world event," said Mr. Vilja. "Most importantly, it is about having fun," Mr. Vilja added.
