Just in time for summer vegetable season, Atlanta-based delivery platform Local Roots, announced today that any metro-Atlanta resident can now open up their backyard gardens and kitchens and sell their homegrown produce and goods to fellow neighbors straight from their mobile device. Previously, Local Roots connected area farmers and artisans to consumers, but this expansion opens the app's marketplace to backyard gardeners and even startup foodpreneurs.
"Bringing the food supply back into local communities is our ultimate goal and mission, and with the prime summer vegetable season upon us, it is the perfect time to expand our service to home growers," said Doug Calahan, founder and CEO of Local Roots. "Our application, however, is about more than just the food itself. Local Roots helps create opportunities to connect, learn, and build more vibrant, sustainable communities."
Currently there are 42 million fruit and vegetable gardeners in the United States as well as 15.9 million people who bake and cook for fun weekly. Local Roots is the only mobile application in the country focusing on connecting local homegrown vendors with consumers in their area.
"Gardening is one of my passions. Every year my husband and I grow a lot of vegetables in our backyard, but we end up throwing about one-third of them away during the season simply because we can't eat it all." said Local Roots user Debbie Britt. "With Local Roots my produce no longer goes to waste. Instead, it lets me share my fabulous cucumbers and peppers with my neighbors and community."
Since its initial launch in 2014, Local Roots has been serving Atlanta residents in the Brookhaven, Buckhead, Midtown and Virginia Highlands neighborhoods by connecting consumers with farmers and local artisans. With the addition of its neighbor vendors, the application also plans to expand to other Atlanta neighborhoods including Decatur and North Midtown as well as suburban neighborhoods including East Cobb and Johns Creek.
Local Roots is currently available on iOS, is free to download and poses no start up costs for home growers, farmers and artisans to sell their products. To learn more about Local Roots or to start selling your homegrown goods today, visit localroots.com or follow us @LocalRootsInc.
