Bellucci Premium recaps an article that shares new research backing up claims that olive oil can help prevent certain diseases in the brain.

According to The Olive Oil Times article published on October 30th titled "More Confirmation Mediterranean Diet Protects from Brain Diseases," a review of 22 studies on the health effects of the Mediterranean diet were conducted.

According to the article, the review was led by Theodora Psaltopoulou, Assistant Professor of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine at the University Of Athens School Of Medicine, and consisted of a "meta-analysis of eligible studies that covered stroke, Parkinson's disease, cognitive impairment and depression." The review provided further evidence that individuals who adhered to the Mediterranean diet showed decreased risks for certain diseases and conditions.

The review showed that the level of adherence to the Mediterranean diet determined the health benefits that could be achieved. Those who had a high adherence to the diet showed a reduction in the risk of stroke, cognitive function and depression. Those who had a medium adherence to the diet showed reduced signs of depression and cognitive impairment.

"Some studies attribute this protective effect to the consumption of foods rich in antioxidants such as olive oil, fruit, vegetables and nuts while others also see benefits of individual foods in the Mediterranean diet such as extra virgin olive oil and walnuts," says the article.

Natalie Sexenian, marketing manager for Bellucci Premium, explains how olive oil contributes to many of the protective effects and health benefits of the Mediterranean diet. "The presence of olive oil in the Mediterranean diet helps make it one of the healthiest diets in the world," she says. "For example, olive oil has been shown to stop the progression of some forms of cancer and lower blood cholesterol and blood pressure."

Bellucci offers three different types of oil, including an organic option, with a mild peppery flavor and fruity undertones that will satisfy any palate. Bellucci Premium Toscano extra virgin olive oil uses olives that are grown on the beautiful landscapes of Tuscany, and maintained by 3rd and 4th generation farmers. The third type of oil Bellucci produces is the finest 100% Italian extra virgin olive oil, grown in many different regions of Italy.
