BWW Reviews: ARB's PREMIERES Enchants Audience

American Repertory Ballet (ARB) continued its 2013-2014 season with Premieres on Saturday evening, October 26th at the Theatre at Raritan Valley Community College in Branchburg, New Jersey. The audience was thrilled by the stunning performances by the ARB dancers and the variety of pieces that the program featured.

Artistic Director, Douglas Martin and Resident Choreographer and Ballet Master, Mary Barton continue to take the company to new heights with challenging works that fully display the talents of their dancers.

The program opened with the World Premiere of Tears of the Moon. Kirk Peterson's spirited choreography of was alternatively tense, sensitive, and joyous. Three couples danced romantic liaisons with complete passion; Tears of the Moon was a beautiful opening to an evening that showcased the versatility of the ARB.

The second piece, Fantasy Baroque, was also a world premiere. Choreographed by Mary Barton, the piece featured three couples in a whimsical, light and lovely dance. The costume design by Michelle Ferranti and head pieces by Gina Ricca perfectly complimented the tone of the ballet. Fresh and fanciful, Fantasy Baroque was a fitting centerpiece for the evening.

The program closed with Blackberry Winter which was originally created in 1999 for a choreography workshop for Ballet Pacifica. With choreography and costume design by Ann Marie DeAngelo and music by Conni Ellisor, Blackberry Winter's theme revolves around unexpected events that lead to fruitful changes. Eleven of ARB's company displayed the grace which has become a signature feature of the ARB along with the right blend of athleticism to show this company's stylish, contemporary flair. Blackberry Winter was a perfect finale to Premieres.

American Repertory Ballet's mission is to bring the joy, beauty, artistry and discipline of classical and contemporary dance to New Jersey and nationwide audiences. Their successful production of Premieres at The Theatre at RVCC was a delight for the metropolitan area audience.

The American Repertory Ballet will present their 50th Annual Nutcracker Production to be performed throughout New Jersey in November and December.
