NY Philharmonic's VERY YOUNG PEOPLE'S CONCERTS To Conclude Season At Merkin Concert Hall, 6/14-15

The New York Philharmonic’s final Very Young People’s Concerts of the season will introduce children ages 3 to 6 to “Treble and Bass,” a program created to show how high and low sounds make music fun, Sunday, June 14, 2009, at 12:30 and 3:00 p.m., and Monday, June 15, at 10:30 a.m., at Merkin Concert Hall, 129 West 67th Street. The program will feature pieces by Dvo?ák, Bartók, and Smetana, along with hands-on music-making with musicians from the orchestra.

Participating Philharmonic musicians will be violinists Anna Rabinova and Fiona Simon; violist Judith Nelson; cellist Qiang Tu; Associate Principal Bass Jon Deak; and flute/piccolo Mindy Kaufman; with Associate PrincipAl Viola Rebecca Young as host. Philharmonic violist Dorian Rence will conclude the tale of Philippe the Penguin’s quest to form a prize-winning string quartet as she narrates her original text set to excerpts from Smetana’s String Quartet No. 1, with projected illustrations by Marion Schoevaert.

Now in their fourth season, the Very Young People’s Concerts are designed to introduce young children to classical music through games, active listening, and hands-on music-making. Before each concert, musicians are stationed in the Merkin Concert Hall lobby to greet families and initiate musical activities on the day’s theme. After each performance, children have an opportunity to try orchestral instruments themselves.

Single tickets for the Very Young People’s Concerts are $15 to $19. Limited availability. Tickets may also be available at the Avery Fisher Box Office, Lincoln Center, Broadway at 65th Street. The Box Office opens at 10:00 a.m., Monday through Saturday, and at noon on Sunday. Tickets are available only at the Kaufman Center on the day of the concert.
