NY Philharmonic's 'VERY YOUNG PEOPLE'S CONCERTS' 'Play' at Merkin Hall 5/10 -5/11

Children ages three to five will be introduced to “Forte and Piano” in a program created to show how dynamics make music fun, at the New York Philharmonic’s Very Young People’s Concerts, Sunday, May 10, 2009, at 12:30 and 3:00 p.m., and Monday, May 11, at 10:30 a.m., at Merkin Concert Hall, 129 West 67th Street. The program will feature pieces by Antonín Dvoák, along with hands-on music-making with musicians from the Orchestra.

Participating Philharmonic musicians will be violinists Anna Rabinova and Sharon Yamada; violist Judith Nelson; cellist Qiang Tu; bass Satoshi Okamoto; and clarinetist Pascual Martinez-Forteza; with Associate Principal Viola Rebecca Young as host. Philharmonic violist Dorian Rence — the writer and narrator of the Very Young People’s Concerts — will recount the continuing story of Philippe the Penguin’s quest to form a prize-winning string quartet, with projected illustrations by Marion Schoevaert.

These concerts are the second in a series of three programs this season. The season’s final programs will explore “Treble and Bass” on June 14–15, 2009, again featuring works by Dvorák and as well as other Central European composers.

Now in their fourth season, the Very Young People’s Concerts are designed to introduce young children to classical music through games, active listening, and hands-on music-making. Before each concert, musicians are stationed in the Merkin Concert Hall lobby to greet families and initiate musical activities on the day’s theme. After each performance, children have an opportunity to try orchestral instruments themselves.

Single tickets for the Very Young People’s Concerts are $15 to $19. Limited availability.
