SYNDROME Comes to The Brick

Syndrome illustrates the seemingly simple dilemma of a man with Tourette's Syndrome working up the nerve to meet his parents for dinner, and goes on to portray the varied complexity of the Syndrome and its effect upon the person who must live with it.

Syndrome is by Kirk Wood Bromley, based upon a concept by Joshua Lewis Berg, who himself was diagnosed with Tourette at the age of 26 and commissioned the playwright to author it for him. Syndrome is performed by Timothy McCown Reynolds, who originally performed it in 2006 in Untitled Theatre Company #61's Neuro-Fest, and again in 2017 for the SaraSOLO Festival in Sarasota Florida, where he was awarded its Best Actor award for his performance.

Kirk Wood Bromley, aka "Shakespeare on mushrooms" (LA Weekly), has been creating verse plays in NYC since 1990. In that time, he has written around 30 of them, and they have been produced by Aaron Beall (Nada), FoolsFury (SF), Bad Epitaph (Cleveland), Sacred Fools (LA), Wesleyan, Kenyon, Mizzou, Inverse Theater (of which he is Artistic Director), and more. Bromley/Inverse have won various awards, including Best Downtown Theater Company (NY Press 2001), the Berrilla Kerr Foundation Playwriting Award (2001), three NY Fringe Festival Excellence Awards (2002, 2003, 2009), and the first Caffe Cino Award (NY Innovative Theatre Awards 2005). While he has been compared to Shakespeare (NY Magazine, Time Out NY, OffOffOff.com, the Cleveland Scene), Stoppard (The Village Voice), and Van Gogh (NYTheatre.com), his writing "speaks directly to its audience's concerns and in its dialect" (American Theatre Magazine).
