Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, July 19-August 11
Legendary songwriter given the Broadway treatment in this joyous jukebox musical
Before she was a hit-maker, Carole King was Carole Klein, a teenaged songwriter from Brooklyn. Beautiful is the story of her journey from high-school dreamer to a trailblazer in a male-dominated profession. Along the way, she befriends fellow writer Cynthia Weil, fights convention, and finds her own definition of success. With classic songs from King, Weil, Gerry Goffin, and Barry Mann (“Up On The Roof,” Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” “One Fine Day,” “You’ve Got A Friend,” and many more), it’s the story of the fire and fortitude that makes an artist legendary.
Lending star power to the cast are the nationally acclaimed actors playing Carole King and her fellow songwriter Cynthia Weil. Alison McCartan, who plays Carole, was most recently seen in the sold-out FOLLIES in Concert at Carnegie Hall. Meggie Cansler Ness is playing Cynthia, the role she originated in pre-Broadway workshops and readings; she then toured across the country to promote the musical. Joining them onstage are Blake West (Gerry Goffin), Madison Adams Hagler (Barry Mann) and an energetic cast of actors from the Birmingham community. With vintage costume design from Kendra Weeks and a set from Kimberly Powers evoking American Bandstand to Laurel Canyon, the American music scene of the 60s and 70s will come to vivid life.
As Beautiful’s Director Valerie Accetta says, “This is such an honest story. It’s not watching an impersonator. It’s watching 30 years of an artist becoming an icon, through all her triumphs and heartbreaks. Carole’s music touches something in us because we’ve had those same moments in our lives.”
