The Baltimore Playwrights Festival begins its 28th season on June 18th and runs through September 6th. During that time, six theatres in the Baltimore area will be presenting ten new plays by Maryland and DC playwrights. Specific dates and production details are located at the bottom of this article.

The festival opens with Bloodlines, by Dan Baum, a full-length drama about a young woman who comes home from college with her boyfriend to celebrate Passover, and in the process uncovers both secrets and grudges that challenge her “sense of self, security, and family harmony.” Marianne Angelella and Peter Shipley direct a production presented by Fells Point Corner Theatre.

In July, two more productions open. The first is Turducken, by Lisa Hodsoll, a full-length comedy stuffed with “secrets, dysfunction, and all-out lunacy”; a missing body also figures prominently. Andrew Peters directs a production presented by Theatrical Mining Company.

This is followed by G-Man, by RoseMary Frisino Toohey, a full-length drama about a garbage man who thinks his life is completely in order ... until he makes an unexpected, horrifying discovery on his route. Miriam Bazensky directs a production presented by Uncommon Voices.

In August, four productions open. The first is Dancing Without You, by Robin Rouse, a full-length drama about an “everywoman” who must overcome sexual abuse, fatherlessness, and other tragedies, and “enjoy every victory alone.” Rikki Howie directs a production presented by Catonsville Theatre Company.

This is followed by Unraveled on the Gravel: A New Musical, by Kevin Kostic, a full-length musical about a “compulsive hitchhiker trying to escape his past.” Unraveled on the Gravel is the Baltimore Playwrights Festival’s first musical; it is directed and presented by Winters Lane Productions.

That same weekend features the premiere of The Ape on the Church Steps, by JM Dinson, a full-length drama about a young man who confronts his father in a mental institution, only to realize he might belong there himself. Barry Feinstein directs a production presented by Theatrical Mining Company.

The festival closes with Sex and Desperation: A Little Something for Everyone, a compilation of four short plays: Leap Day, by Lee Saperstein, about two cavemen in love; Monitors on the Quad, by Julie Lewis, about the sometimes inept forces that watch over us all; Imperfect Hour, by Michael Stang, which wonders “How many imperfections are you willing to put up with to get what you really want?”; and Salt Water, by Gina Young, about the dilemma of choosing between friendship and one’s heart. Lynn Morton directs a production presented by Audrey Herman Spotlighters Theatre.
