Today in 1957, The Taming of the Shrew openend at the Phoenix Theatre, where it ran for 23 performances. A comedy by William Shakespeare, the play is believed to have been written between 1590 and 1591. The main plot depicts the courtship of Petruchio, a gentleman of Verona, and Katherina, the headstrong, obdurate shrew. Initially, Katherina is an unwilling participant in the relationship, but Petruchio tempers her with various psychological torments-the 'taming'-until she becomes a compliant and obedient bride. The subplot features a competition between the suitors of Katherina's more desirable sister, Bianca.

Now according to USA Today, Davis is eying LES MISERABLES star Anne Hathaway and Colin Firth to play Eliza Doolittle and Henry Higgins respectively. Firth has also starred in a big screen musical in the past, taking on Harry in 2008's MAMMA MIA. Neither actor, however, has yet starred in a Broadway production.

A Chorus Line couple Mario Lopez and Courtney Mazza just announced that their second baby is on the way! According to Celebuzz, Lopez said of the news: 'I am the happiest father in the world. We cannot wait to welcome baby Lopez number two into our lives.'

Chita Rivera, Stephen Sondheim and Harold Prince share the 2013 Jerome Robbins Award, which was presented last night, February at the Baryshnikov Arts Center. A full evening of performances, hosted by Frank Rich and featuring stars from Broadway as well as dancers from New York City Ballet were included in the presentation. Crazy for You won the 1992 Tony Award for Best Musical. According to a report by Variety, the judging system at the Olivier Awards is soon in for a big change. Though no official announcement has yet been made, the new sytem will 'sideline the awards' small pool of famously impartial judges by adding the votes of members of the Society of London Theater, the org comprising some 170 theater owners, producers and general managers, in the final round of the complex voting system.'
