Today in 1946, Annie Get Your Gun opened at the Imperial Theatre, where it ran for 1147 performances. Annie Get Your Gun is a musical with lyrics and music written by Irving Berlin and a book by Herbert Fields and his sister Dorothy Fields. The story is a fictionalized version of the life of Annie Oakley (1860-1926), who was a sharpshooter from Ohio, and her husband, Frank Butler. Songs that became hits include 'There's No Business Like Show Business', 'Doin' What Comes Natur'lly', 'You Can't Get a Man with a Gun', 'They Say It's Wonderful', and 'Anything You Can Do.'

This spring, Virginia's Signature Theatre will present the world premiere musical Beaches, adapted from the beloved 1985 novel by Iris Rainer Dart. Directed by Signature Theatre's Artistic Director Eric Schaeffer (Broadway's Follies, Million Dollar Quartet), this heartfelt chronicle of a decades-long friendship between two unforgettable women will starMara Davi (Broadway's A Chorus Line and The Drowsy Chaperone) as Bertie White and Alysha Umphress (Broadway's American Idiot and On a Clear Day You Can See Forever) as Cee Cee Bloom. Rehearsals are in full swing and in just one week the TONY Award-winning score from Titanic: The Musical will be performed live at Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center. Tickets are selling fast for this once-off concert performance, which features almost the entire cast from the original Broadway musical, over 200 singers, and the enlarged forces of the professional New York City Chamber Orchestra, all Directed by Don Stephenson, with Music Direction by Kevin Stites. According to Deadline, Broadway director Scott Ellis has signed on to direct NBC's upcoming comedy from Warner Bros. and executive producer Ellen DeGeneres, ONE BIG HAPPY. The show is about 'two platonic friends since childhood, a lesbian, Lizzy, and her straight male best friend, Luke (Zano) who have been living together and have been trying to have a baby via artificial insemination for some time. They finally get pregnant - just as Luke meets and impulsively marries the love of his life.'

As BroadwayWorld previously reported, Newsies just welcomed Liana Hunt to the role of the show's leading lady Katherine Plumber earlier this month. Kara Lindsay, who created the role, departed the production on Sunday, February 2nd. Today in 1979, They're Plaing Our Song opened at the Imperial Theatre, where it ran for 1082 performances. With a book by Neil Simon, lyrics by Carole Bayer Sager, and music by Marvin Hamlisch, the musical is based on the real-life relationship of Hamlisch and Sager- a wisecracking composer finds a new, offbeat lyricist, but initially the match is not one made in heaven. The two undergo a series of trials and overcome a number of hurdles before finding true love by the final curtain. They're Playing Our Song is essentially a two-character show. Vernon and Sonia are the sole characters on stage; each character has a three-person Greek chorus acting as their inner voices, and there are no big production numbers.

Today in 1959, The Most Happy Fella opened at City Center where it ran for 16 performances. With a book, music, and lyrics by Frank Loesser, the story isabout a romance between an older man and younger woman, is based on the play They Knew What They Wanted by Sidney Howard. The original Broadway production opened in 1956 and ran for 14 months. A 1992 revival, directed by Gerald Guttierrez, featured Spiro Malas as Tony, Sophie Hayden as Rosabella, Charles Pistone as Joe, Claudia Catania as Marie, Liz Larsen as Cleo, and Scott Waara as Herman.

Bronx Bombers, a new American play by Eric Simonson, began previews on January 10, 2014. The show is produced on Broadway by Fran Kirmser and Tony Ponturo, and directed by Eric Simonson. Bronx Bombers officially opened last night, February 6, at Circle in the Square Theatre and BroadwayWorld's Richard Ridge was there to chat with the company about the big night.
