A brand-new musical featuring the powerful and deeply human songs of one of the musical theater's most exciting songwriters, THE DANGER YEAR charts one year of calamity, upheaval and rebirth in the lives of five interconnected characters. Today in 1982, Macbeth opened at the Circle in the Square Theatre, where it ran for 21 performances. Written by William Shakespeare, Macbeth is about a regicide and its aftermath. It is Shakespeare's shortest tragedy and is believed to have been written sometime between 1603 and 1607. The earliest account of a performance of what was probably Shakespeare's play is April 1611, when Simon Forman recorded seeing such a play at the Globe Theatre.

Today in 1982, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat opened at the Royale Theatre (now the Bernard B, Jacobs Theatre), where it ran for 747 performances. Written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, the story is based on the 'coat of many colors' story of Joseph from the Hebrew Bible's Book of Genesis. In 1999, a movie version with Donny Osmond in the title role was released, directed by David Mallet.

As BroadwayWorld reported earlier today, actress Emma Watson has been cast as Belle in Disney's upcoming live-action interpretation of Beauty and the Beast. The film is directed by Bill Condon and produced by Mandeville Films' David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman. Production is anticipated to begin later this year. The big news made us reminiscent of the original film, so below, we are flashing back to Angela Lansbury, who played Mrs. Potts in the animated film, as she sings the title song!

CBS has announced that HONEYMOON IN VEGAS star Tony Danza and IT'S ONLY A PLAY's Martin Short will guest on THE LATE LATE SHOW on Monday, January 26.

Today in 1988, The Phantom of the Opera opened at the Majestic Theatre, where it has played for 9980 performances and still running. Written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Charles Hart, the musical opened in the West End in 1986, celebrating its 25th anniversary in October 2011. It won the 1986 Olivier Award and the 1988 Tony Award for Best Musical, and Michael Crawford (in the title role) won the 1986 Olivier and 1988 Tony for Best Performance by an Actor in a Musical. It is the longest-running Broadway show by a wide margin, the second longest-running West End musical, and the third longest-running West End show overall.

NEVERMORE - The Imaginary Life and Mysterious Death of Edgar Allan Poe, a unique theatrical experience combining haunting music, poetic storytelling, and stunning stagecraft to tell the fascinating and moving life story of iconic American writer Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849), began performances at New World Stages (340 West 50th Street between 8th and 9th Avenues) on January 14, 2015, with an official opening night scheduled for Sunday, January 25, 2015. The Off-Broadway premiere of a new version of Joe Pintauro's classic drama SNOW ORCHID at the Lion Theatre on Theatre Row (410 W. 42nd St.), presented by the Miranda Theatre Company and directed by Valentina Fratti, will play a strictly limited four-week engagement, February 3-28, 2015. Roundabout Theatre Company presents a new Off-Broadway production of Stephen Sondheim & James Lapine's Tony Award-winning Into the Woods. Directed by Noah Brody and Ben Steinfeld, this production premiered in May 2013 at the McCarter Theatre in association with the Fiasco Theater. Broadway Sings, the concert series honoring pop stars with a Broadway twist, concludes its seventh installment this Sunday at (le) Poisson Rouge after a sold out show on Monday at Highline Ballroom. Some of Broadway's brightest talents will sing completely new arrangements of the hits of pop superstar P!NK, accompanied by a 10-piece band playing brand new, original orchestrations of the singer's greatest songs.
