Here is Zak Resnick singing 'Reason to Fall' by Zoe Sarnak from her musical The Years Between: a poignant window into lives, loves, and dreams of the new 'lost generation' set to a rock, folk, pop and soul score. The piece centers on Piper, a 27 year-old modern Peter Pan living in a modern American city, and the group of millennials in her life. They struggle financially, change jobs, and move through long term but non-committal relationships in a snapshot of the 'boomerang' (NY Times) generation and their idealized, if sometimes misguided, search for purpose. One of those friends is Damon, parentless and fiercely loyal to his friends and relationships. Damon has his heart broken by BA, the woman he thought he'd marry. He revisits their old apartment together and standing in a ghost-town of their memories he sings.

Happy Birthday, Charles Strouse! Strouse's first Broadway musical was the 1960 hit Bye Bye Birdie, with lyrics by Lee Adams, who would become his long time collaborator. Following this was Golden Boy (1964, also with Adams), starring Sammy Davis, Jr. and It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's Superman (1966, based on the popular comic strip) which introduced the song 'You've Got Possibilities' sung by Linda Lavin. In 1970, Applause (starring Lauren Bacall, with book by Betty Comden and Adolph Green, and lyrics by Adams) won Strouse his second Tony Award. In 1977, Strouse adapted another comic strip for the stage, creating the hit Annie, which garnered him his third Tony Award and two Grammy Awards. Other Strouse musicals include Charlie and Algernon (1979), Dance a Little Closer (1983, with lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner), Rags (1986), Nick & Nora (1993), and An American Tragedy (1995, with lyrics by David Shaber).

Happy Birthday, Harvey Fierstein! In addition to Torch Song Trilogy, La Cage aux Folles and A Catered Affair, Fierstein's Broadway acting credits include playing the mother, Edna Turnblad in Hairspray (2002), for which he won a Tony Award for Best Leading Actor in a Musical. He later replaced Alfred Molina as Tevye in the 2004 revival of Fiddler on the Roof. Fierstein returned to the theatre when he toured as Tevye, replacing Chaim Topol in Fiddler on the Roof starting in December 2009. On February 15, 2011, he replaced Douglas Hodge as Albin/Zaza in the Broadway revival of La Cage aux Folles playing opposite Christopher Sieber. He is nominated for a 2012 Tony Award for the book of Newsies.

Today in 1980, The Music Man opened at City Center, where it ran for 21 performances. The Music Man is a musical with book, music, and lyrics by Meredith Willson, based on a story by Willson and Franklin Lacey. The plot concerns con man Harold Hill, who poses as a boys' band organizer and leader and sells band instruments and uniforms to naive townsfolk before skipping town with the cash. In 1957, the show became a hit on Broadway, winning five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and running for 1,375 performances.

Happy Birthday, Mary Testa! Testa is a two-time Tony Award nominee, for performances in revivals of Leonard Bernstein's On the Town (1998) and 42nd Street (2001). She made her debut as Miss Goldberg in William Finn's one-act musical In Trousers (1979), part one of his 'Marvin Trilogy,' winning audiences over with her rendition of 'Set Those Sails' and 'I Am Wearing a Hat,' as well as 'The Rape of Miss Goldberg by Marvin.' She returned to Broadway in July, 2007 in the musical-theater remake of the 1980 film Xanadu for which she received a Drama Desk Award nomination.

Josh Groban is busy promoting his new album, titled 'Stages,' in New York City. Released earlier this spring, via Reprise Records, the album is a collection of some of the greatest musical theater songs of all time, which Groban describes as 'gorgeously arranged songs that have stood the test of time,' and which he was drawn to because of their combination of 'incredible melody with an incredible story.' Rehearsals are currently underway for Broadway's new musical Amazing Grace, which will play Broadway's Nederlander Theatre (208 West 41st Street) with performances beginning Thursday, June 25 for a Thursday, July 16 opening night. The cast features Tony Award nominee Josh Young, Erin Mackey, Tony Award winner Chuck Cooper, Tom Hewitt, Chris Hoch, Stanley Bahorek,Harriett D. Foy, Laiona Michelle, Rachael Ferrera and Elizabeth Ward Land. Today in 1975, Chicago opened at the 46th Street Theatre (now the Richard Rogers Theatre), where it ran for 936 performances. Chicago is a musical set in Prohibition-era Chicago, with music is by John Kander with lyrics by Fred Ebb and a book by Ebb and Bob Fosse. The story is a satire on corruption in the administration of criminal justice and the concept of the 'celebrity criminal'. The original cast starred Chita Rivera as Velma Kelly, Gwen Verdon as Roxie Hart, Jerry Orbach as Billy Flynn and Barney Martin as Amos Hart.

It's just days until the 69th Annual Tony Awards, and just last night the nominees gathered at The Diamond Horseshoe at the Paramount Hotel to celebrate the 2015 Tony Honors for Excellence in the Theatre and 2015 Special Award Recipients, including Tommy Tune, Stephen Schwartz, and John Cameron Mitchell (all of whom will accept their awards on Sunday night), as well as honorees Gene O'Donovan, Adrian Bryan-Brown, and Arnold Abramson.  Check out their speeches below!

The 71st Annual Theatre World Awards -- the first award created in 1945 to recognize a debut theatre performance on or off-Broadway -- just honored the legacy of Betty Comden and On The Town with a special recognition for 'Outstanding Contribution to the Theatre World.' The 71st Annual Theatre World Awards took place Monday night, June 1, 2015 at Broadway's Lyric Theatre (213 W. 42nd St, New York, NY 10036).

Last night HBO hosted the premiere of LARRY KRAMER IN LOVE & ANGER, airing June 29 at 9pm, at the Time Warner Center. In attendance to support both Kramer and the documentary were stars of stage and screen including Mark Ruffalo and Joe Mantello, both of whom starred in THE NORMAL HEART (on HBO and Broadway, respectively) as Ned Weeks, the character that Kramer based on himself. Documentary director Jean Carlomusto, Christine Baranski, Kelly Bishop, Cherry Jones, Stephen Spinella, and President of HBO Documentary Films, Sheila Nevins were also in attendance to screen the film and present Larry with a cake celebrating his upcoming 80th birthday on June 25. Today in 1954, Carousel opened at City Center, where it ran for 79 performances. Carousel is the second stage musical by the team of Richard Rodgers (music) and Oscar Hammerstein II (book and lyrics). The work premiered in 1945 and was adapted from Ferenc Molnar's 1909 play Liliom, transplanting its Budapest setting to the Maine coastline. The story revolves around carousel barker Billy Bigelow, whose romance with millworker Julie Jordan comes at the price of both their jobs. He attempts a robbery to provide for Julie and their unborn child; when it goes wrong, he has a chance to make things right.
