Today in 1995, Smokey Joe's Cafe opened at the Virginia Theatre (now the August Wilson Theatre) where it ran for 2036 performances. Smokey Joe's Cafe is a musical revue showcasing 39 pop standards, including rock and roll, rhythm and blues songs written by songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. The Original Broadway cast recording, Smokey Joe's Cafe: The Songs Of Leiber And Stoller won a Grammy award in 1996. In revue format with no unifying theme the 39 songs are presented by various members of the cast in various combinations, with no dialogue. There are novelty songs ('Charlie Brown'), romantic ballads ('Spanish Harlem') and infectious melodies ('There Goes My Baby').

Today in 2009, Guys and Dolls opened at the Nederlander Theatre, where it ran for 121 performances. Guys and Dolls is a musical with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser and book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows. It is based on 'The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown' and 'Blood Pressure', two short stories by Damon Runyon, and also borrows characters and plot elements from other Runyon stories, most notably 'Pick the Winner'. Premiering on Broadway in 1950, the original production ran for 1200 performances and won the Tony Award for Best Musical. The musical has had several Broadway revivals as well as West End productions.

The Road to DISASTER! continues with four-time Drama Desk and two-time Drama League nominee Jennifer Simard of Broadway's Sister Act, Shrek The Musical and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.

Platinum-selling recording artist, Disney star and newly named Covergirl, Zendaya, stole the show in her breathtaking performance of 'Neverland' at The Weinstein Company's 2016 pre-Oscar dinner on Saturday, February 27 at the Montage, Marchesa Ballroom in Beverly Hills. Broadway's new musical comedy Disaster! is currently in previews at the Nederlander Theatre (208 West 41st Street), directed by Jack Plotnick with a book by three-time Emmy Award nominee and Grammy Award nominee Seth Rudetsky and Jack Plotnick. A brilliant cast of dancers from Broadway's biggest hits and some of the most sought-after dance companies will bring to life Pure Motion, an evening of dances by emerging choreographer Ray Mercer. Produced by and benefiting Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, the evening will feature cast members from Broadway's An American in Paris, The Lion King and Wicked as well as past and current dancers from Ailey II, Company XIV, Complexions Contemporary Ballet, Nederlands Dans Theater and more.

As BroadwayWorld reported today, Lincoln Center Theater will join forces with Jujamcyn Theaters this fall to bring William Finn and James Lapine's Tony Award-winning musical Falsettos back to Broadway. Falsettos will begin previews Thursday, September 29 and open on Thursday, October 27 at the Walter Kerr Theatre (219 West 48 Street). Lapine will return to helm the production.

MCC THEATER presents Noah Haidle's Smokefall, playing through Sunday, March 20th.
