Today in 2009, the second Broadway revival of HAIR opened at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, where it ran for 519 performances. Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical is a rock musical with a book and lyrics by James Rado and Gerome Ragni and music by Galt MacDermot. A product of the hippie counter-culture and sexual revolution of the 1960s, several of its songs became anthems of the anti-Vietnam War peace movement. Hair tells the story of the 'tribe', a group of politically active, long-haired hippies of the 'Age of Aquarius' living a bohemian life in New York City and fighting against conscription into the Vietnam War.

Today in 2000, Contact opened at the Vivien Beaumont Theatre, where it ran for 1010 performances.Contact: The Musical is a musical 'dance play' (some deemed it a ballet) that was developed by Susan Stroman and John Weidman, with its 'book' by Weidman and both choreography and direction by Stroman. It consists of three separate one-act dance plays. The show was received with much critical acclaim and won the 2000 Tony Award for Best Musical. A West End production opened at the Queen's Theatre in October 2002, and closed on May 10, 2003.

Today in 1951, The King and I opened at the St. James Theatre, where it ran for 1246 performances. The King and I is the fifth musical by the team of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. The work is based on the 1944 novel Anna and the King of Siam by Margaret Landon and derives from the memoirs of Anna Leonowens, who became governess to the children of King Mongkut of Siam in the early 1860s. The story deals with the experiences of the British schoolteacher, who is hired as part of the King's drive to modernize his country. The relationship between the King and Anna is marked by conflict through much of the play, as well as by a love that neither is able to express.

Roundabout Theatre Company in association with Damian Arnold, will present the Broadway premiere of Marc Camoletti's classic farce Don't Dress For Dinner, starring Ben Daniels as 'Robert,' Patricia Kalember as 'Jacqueline,' Adam James as 'Bernard,' David Aron Damane as 'George' and Jennifer Tilly as 'Suzanne' with Spencer Kayden as 'Suzette.' Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog creator and GLEE director Joss Whedon recently had a long chat with GQ, where he brought up his taste in musicals. Whedon commented: 'The musicals that I love on stage are generally meant for the stage. I'm not a Les Mis fan. I have a lot of friends who just want to beat me with sticks when I tell them that but what I'm interested in are new musicals, real book musicals - not jukebox musicals.'

The Dallas Pops, American Airlines Center and CBS Radio just presented an epic-size concert event at the American Airlines Center on March 23. The show Do You Hear the People Sing featured the music of Les Misérables, Miss Saigon, in a Broadway-style concert on a scale seldom seen. THE LYONS debuted last fall at the Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning Vineyard Theatre and now begins previews on April 5, with an official opening night set for April 23. Last night, March 27, Raven-Symone took over the leading role of Deloris Van Cartier in Broadway's SISTER ACT. She is stepping into the high-heeled boots of Tony and Olivier Award nominee Patina Miller, who gave her final performance on Sunday, March 18. SISTER ACT, which will celebrate its one-year Anniversary on Broadway on April 20, is playing at the Broadway Theater. Showtime's 'Californication' will get the Broadway treatment next season, according to TVLine's, Micheal Ausiello. Ausiello writes: 'Hank's going to get Smash'd. That is, a storyline in which his novel gets turned into a Broadway musical might make the Showtime series briefly resemble the NBC series.'

According to the New York Times, a Harry Potter parody play titled POTTED POTTER, which is currently playing at Toronto's Panasonic Theatre, might move to New York this summer. The two-man show, starring Daniel Clarkson and Jefferson Turner, is looking to open at off-Broadway's Little Shubert Theatre.

Bufford (this Monday's11 O'Clock Numbers revue at Birdland), and regulars Allana Adderly, Daniel Kirkley, Matthew Falber, William Blake, and LA diva Valarie Pettiford!

On Tuesday, March 27th, Rosie's Theater Kids held an event called 'Passing It On,' where the Kids performed a show which they learned in tandem with mega mentors like Audra McDonald, BD Wong, Brandon Victor Dixon, Dana Moore, and Derick K Grant, among others. On Monday, March 26, the Broadway at Birdland concert series was proud to present jazz vocalist Jane Monheit in 'Jane Monheit Swings Cole Porter's Anything Goes.' The evening was the creation of arranger/bass player MaryAnn McSweeney, who also brought the wildly popular 'Avenue Q Swings' to the Birdland stage several years ago.
