Fri Aug 27 9:00PM LATHANFLIN & ALI
(Lathan Hardy, saxophone; Sean Ali, bass; Flin Van Hemmen, drums)
LathanFlin&Ali is a trio that celebrates and explores the diverse patterns of improvised music. Lathan Hardy plays alto saxophone, Flin van Hemmen plays drums, and Sean Ali plays the contrabass. Together, they weave a tapestry that is the inheritor of 20th century music; joining lush lyricism with aching dissonance, stoic form with dense abstraction, and the serenity of timelessness with the urgency of the present moment. For improvised music par excellence, don't miss LathanFlin&Ali.

Zimmerman Adapts CANDIDE in Major Musical Revival At The Goodman, 9/17August 25, 2010Goodman Theatre celebrates its 10th season in Chicago's North Loop Theatre District with a fresh take on an enduring masterpiece- Candide, Voltaire's effervescent, picaresque adventure, newly adapted and directed by Chicago's own Mary Zimmerman, the Goodman's Manilow Resident Director. A cast of 19 and an orchestra of 12, under the direction of Music Director Doug Peck, bring to life nearly 30 songs in Leonard Bernstein's glorious score, and recreate Voltaire's satirical story of Candide (Geoff Packard)-a young optimist shipwrecked, soldiered, swindled and separated (repeatedly) from his true love, Cunegonde (Lauren Molina). For this major revival, Zimmerman has tapped her signature design team-Daniel Ostling (Set), Mara Blumenfeld (Costumes), T.J. Gerkens (Lighting) and Richard Woodbury (Sound). Danny Pelzig choreographs the cataclysmic events that ensue.

The Odeon Presents HAMLET, 10/7August 25, 2010Nikolaï Kolyada is still pretty much unknown in France. He will not remain so for long. His Hamlet is enveloped in pagan celebrations. With Kolyada, the actor's voices have become urgent, essential. Shakespeare's words are sung, chewed, chanted by wonderfully savage actors who twist and knead them just like the canvases hanging from the walls that are slashed. Speed, fusion and infectiousness are all present at this impure feast where the director himself, dressed as a pathetic angel, plays the role of the Ghost who has come to take the naked body of Ophelia, while his fetish actor, Oleg Yagodine, gives the restless, dark prince, all the beauty of a character from Visconti.
