BREAKTHROUGH: THE DRAMATIC STORY OF THE DISCOVERY OF INSULIN. Now - January 31, 2011. An exhibition recalling the desperate fight for life that used to be waged by juvenile diabetes patients, and commemorating the events of 1921 that inaugurated a new era of hope for them and their families. Exploring the roles of science, government, higher education and industry in developing and distributing a life-saving drug, the exhibition will bring to life the personalities who discovered insulin and raced to bring it to the world, and will tell the story of one extraordinary New York girl-Elizabeth Evans Hughes--who was among the very first patients to be saved. The exhibit will feature digital interactives, film, artifacts, and ephemera drawn form the Historical Society's own collections and from the University of Toronto, Eli Lilly and Company, the Rockefeller Institute, the Joslin Clinic, and New York Academy of Medicine.
THE PEARL THEATRE COMPANY (J.R. Sullivan, Artistic Director; Shira Beckerman, Managing Director) has announced that actor Chris Mixon, currently featured in the company's production of THE SNEEZE, will appear in the spring production of WITTENBERG as Dr. Martin Luther. WITTENBERG will be directed by J.R. Sullivan and run at New York City Center Stage II March 11 through April 17, 2011. Tickets are currently on sale.
The lights have barely dimmed on Alliance Theater's production of Twist, Debbie Allen's New Orleans 1928 rendition of the Charles Dickens' classic, and the director/choreographer has already announced the Premier of The Hot Chocolate Nutcracker, her hilarious and culturally rich take on the perennial holiday classic. The show will run at UCLA's Royce Hall from December 9, 2010 to December 11, 2010, with 100 percent of the proceeds benefitting the children of the Debbie Allen Dance Academy (www.debbieallendanceacademy.com) and the greater Los Angeles community.
Peter Lerman, a 2010 Jonathan Larson Award-winner, will present his New York Debut concert at the Laurie Beechman Theater on Monday, November 1st, at 9:30pm. The evening of original music will feature performances by 'Spring Awakening's' Christy Altomare and TONY Award nominee Brandon Victor Dixon. The evening will be directed by Laura Pietropinto.

The New York Philharmonic will offer a tribute to Dimitri Mitropoulos, its former Music Director and one of the towering musical figures of the 20th century - with concerts, lectures, film screenings, an archival exhibit, and a special radio program - throughout the month of November 2010, commemorating the 50th anniversary of his death. Coinciding with the cinema release of filmmaker Clio Barnard's award-winning The Arbor, Artangel Interaction commission AS IT GOES celebrates the unique power of one of the UK's most distinctive and sorely missed playwrights. For four nights only, this series of readings, performed at the Young Vic, remembers Andrea Dunbar's inimitable voice, at once controversial and hilarious, brutally honest and deeply personal. Each reading will be accompanied by one of four new short plays inspired by Andrea's work by teenagers from east London, followed by the screening of scenes from The Arbor. The young playwrights will be mentored by Lorne Campbell (Greyscale, Traverse), Gbolahan Obisesan (Royal Court, National Theatre, Young Vic), Jo Carter (Artistic Director, Immediate Theatre) and Rob Watt (Soho Theatre, Stratford Circus, Royal Court). On the final day of readings a panel discussion will take place with Max Stafford Clark, Clio Barnard, Jo Carter and actors from The Arbor, with a reading of Robin Soans' play, A State Affair (2000) which looked at life on a Bradford estate.

Indiana University's new Center for Integrative Photographic Studies opened last spring with a mission to promote the multidisciplinary study of photography among the arts, sciences and humanities at all eight of IU's campuses and beyond. This fall, the center launched a program that will bring at least two external fellows to campus each year for periods of time ranging from two days to a week. The center hosted a lecture by Tokihiro Sato, one of Japan's best-known artists working in contemporary photography, in early September.

Philadelphia's Prince Music Theater (Chesnut Street) has filed for bankruptcy protection under Chapter 11, halting a scheduled sheriff's sale on Tuesday, October 5. The anticipated sale came in the wake of a foreclosure statement made by TD Bank two years ago, in which they cited the Prince for nonpayment of debt. According to The Philadelphia Inquirer, the theater owes TD Bank approximately $4.8 million.
BLOODY BLOODY ANDREW JACKSON stars Benjamin Walker and his leading lady, Maria Elena Ramirez, have teamed up to release a dramatic music video about the intoxicating effects of love. The video showcases a Spanish version of the show's 'Illness as a Metaphor,' and stars Ben Steinfeld and Justin Levine, donning guitars, sombreros and exaggerated moustaches -- all in the name of love.

Promises, Promises cast members sing 'Oh Come, Oh Come Emmanuel,' and Joey Curatolo, who plays Paul McCartney in RAIN - A Tribute To The Beatles On Broadway, wrote and recorded an original song 'Wishing You a Very Merry Christmas.'
The boys from Hazzard County are making their way to Niagara Falls in January. John Schneider and Tom Wopat, stars of the 1980s hit TV series, The Dukes of Hazzard, will perform songs from their solo careers at the Avalon Theatre for two nights, January 21 & 22.
The Institute of Visual Arts (Inova) at the UWM Peck School of the Arts opens an exhibition of work by the artists who received the Greater Milwaukee Foundation's Mary L. Nohl Fund Fellowships for Individual Artists in 2009. The Nohl Fellowship exhibition opens on Friday, October 8, 2010 at Inova/Kenilworth, 2155 N. Prospect Ave. It brings together work by two artists selected in the Established Artist category: Peter Barrickman and Harvey Opgenorth; and two artists selected in the Emerging Artist category: Kim Miller and John Riepenhoff. For the first time in the history of the Nohl Fellowship program, the exhibition will also include several works that are the result of a year-long collaboration among the artists.
