An exhibition described as 'exploring the rich interactions between pictorial and garden arts in China across more than 1,000 years will be on view at The Metropolitan Museum of Art beginning August 18. Showcasing more than 60 paintings as well as ceramics, carved bamboo, lacquerware, metalwork, textiles, and contemporary photographs-Chinese Gardens: Pavilions, Studios, Retreatswill be displayed in eight galleries encircling The Astor Court, a Chinese garden that is modeled on a 17th-century scholars' courtyard in the Garden of the Master of the Fishing Nets in Suzhou. After more than a year during which the Museum hosted several major loan exhibitions in its galleries for Chinese painting, the installation, drawn entirely from the permanent collection, features many of the Metropolitan's most important paintings.'

As part of the traveling exhibition, New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music, members of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra will join the Geechee Gullah Ring Shouters to perform "Songs of the Georgia Sea Islands" - a collaborative program of African-American spirituals and slave songs native to the Georgia Low Country - on Saturday, August 18, 2012, at 7:00 p.m. in the Archie B. Myers Sr. Fine Arts Center at the McIntosh Academy in Darien, GA. This concert is free and open to the public.

This month, as Susanna Phillips finishes her performances of Mozart's Idomeneo at Ravinia Festival (August 17 and 19), the soprano will immerse herself in chamber music at Twickenham Fest, the summer chamber music festival that she co-founded in her hometown of Huntsville, Alabama.

The Board of Directors of HSPVA Friends has named Alene Haehl as its new executive director, succeeding Mary Martha Lappe, who retired in May after serving in that role since the organization was founded in 1997. A graduate of HSPVA, Haehl comes to the job following several years as a consultant with AndrisinAbbey, LLC, a boutique consulting firm for nonprofit organizations, where she guided many organizations through strategic growth of their development programs. She graduated magna cum laude from Boston University's University Professors Program with a cross-disciplinary degree in the Management and Development of Non-Profit Organizations.
