Variety has confirmed that Evan Rachel Wood, who had been set to star as Mary Jane Watson in the much delayed Broadway production of SPIDER-MAN: Turn Off The Dark, has bowed out of the production altogether. A statement out from the producers claims that her departure is due to a 'scheduling conflict' but that a search is 'underway to find a new Mary Jane to join the rest of the cast in the production.'

On March 20 and 21, The Signature Theatre will celebrate the life and work of composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim, the man who has transformed the face of American musical theater with works such as A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Company, Follies, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, and Sunday in the Park with George. Sondheim turns 80 on March 22, and since he's Signature's 'signature' composer, the theater company will honor him with a full weekend of free events including lobby performances, backstage tours, films, lectures, actor discussions, a critic forum, a sing-along, and a birthday cake. Tony Simotes, Shakespeare & Company's Artistic Director, today announces the full lineup for the summer portion of S&Co.'s 33rd season, his first as Artistic Director. Joining the previously announced Mainstage titles is a special addition to the Founders' Theatre lineup, plus the exciting programming at the Elayne P. Bernstein Theater and key casting info for the summer season. In addition to previous casting announcements, award-winning long-time Company actor Jonathan Epstein returns to S&Co. after a six-year absence to join the cast of The Winter's Tale in the role of Leontes. Twitter Watch shines a BWW spotlight on Diane Paulus, the Tony-nominated director of Broadway's HAIR and Artistic Director of A.R.T. in Boston. Paulus recently finished directing the new Tribe in the Broadway hit, who premiere tonight, March 9, at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. She next takes the original Tribe to London, where they will open in the West End at the Gilegud Theatre on April 14.

Variety publisher Neil Stiles announced today that the famed trade paper will be laying off its longtime chief film and theater critics, Todd McCarthy and David Rooney, respectively. No reflection on the quality of the mens' contributions, Stiles stated that, 'We are eliminating all full-time review staff for film and theater.'

Karen Ziemba, a Tony Award-winner and star of Long Wharf Theatre's smash hit production of Sylvia, will be performing at the 2010 Gala: Take the Stage, held on Monday, June 7.

Weekend Movie Box Office Update: March 5 - March 7, 2010

In a show of semi-permanent appreciation, ROCK OF AGES honored of one of its most dedicated fans and winner of its holiday 'Deck the Halls Extreme Rock' contest, Gavin Knox, this month. For the Christmas challenge, the production invited fans to submit a performance video of a holiday carol, sung in the rockin' style of the hit show. The winner was selected by ROCK OF AGES cast members, including Constantine Maroulis, Kerry Butler, and James Carpinello. The prize package included a pair of tickets to the performance, a backstage tour, a curtain call ovation, dinner for two at the Hard Rock Cafe in Times Square, a copy of the original cast recording, and a Temptu tattoo, applied by the show's make-up artist, worn by the cast members on stage each night.

Last Night, March 7, stars from all over the world came out for the 82nd Annual Academy Awards Ceremony at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood California. 'The Hurt Locker' won Best Picture and the film's director Kathryn Bigelow took home the award for Best Director. Jeff Bridges took home the Oscar for Best Actor for his work in 'Crazy Heart', Sandra Bullock won Best Actress for 'The Blind Side', Christoph Waltz took home Best Supporting Actor for 'Inglourious Basterds' and Mo'Niqe garnered the award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in 'Precious'.
