The 2016 Lucille Lortel Awards for Outstanding Achievement Off-Broadway were handed out last night to recipients in 18 categories, with two special awards and two honorary awards also bestowed. The Lortel Awards were distributed in a ceremony at NYU Skirball Center hosted by Zachary Levi, star of Broadway's She Loves Me. This year's event was once again a benefit for The Actors Fund. Drama Desk, Tony, and Emmy Award nominee and Theater World Award and NAACP Image Award winner Vanessa Williams and Drama Desk, Tony, Emmy, Golden Globe, and Drama League Award Nominee and SAG & TV Land Award winner Matthew Morrison announced the nominations for the 61st Annual Drama Desk Awards just yesterday. Earlier this week,  La MaMa  hosted a 29-hour Equity reading of Chix 6, with Book/Music/Lyrics by Lourds Lane. The event featured direction by Jackson Grace Gay, music direction by Wendy Bobbitt Cavett, and assistant music direction by Julie McBride.

PFLAG National-the nation's largest organization uniting families, allies, and people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ)- just honored Emmy and Tony Award-winning actress and singer Kristin Chenoweth, speaker/author Dr. Melissa Harris-Perry, and Wells Fargo at the 8th Annual Straight for Equality Awards Gala.

The cast celebrated the milestone with a post-performance party at Tony's di Napoli Restaurant, featuring the unveiling of a portrait featuring stars John Owen-Jones (Valjean) and Hayden Tee (Javert) by artist Dan May for the restaurant's Broadway Wall of Fame.  The party was hosted by Bruce Dimpflmaier and Tony's di Napoli and emceed by Valerie Smaldone. The North American premiere of playwright Lucy Prebble's award-winning new play The Effect opened just last night, March 20th at Barrow Street Theatre (27 Barrow Street at 7th Avenue). With direction by David Cromer, the new American production of The Effect featuresKati Brazda (Our Town), Susannah Flood(Tribes, Love and Information), Carter Hudson(The Substance of Fire), George Demas, and Steve Key (August: Osage County). Broadway's new musical comedy Disaster! is currently in previews at the Nederlander Theatre (208 West 41st Street) and already the cast has welcomed a slew of Broadway friends backstage. The Drama League of New York just celebrated a major milestone few organizations have achieved -- its 100th birthday! The 100th Birthday Party was held on January 11, 2016, at Feinstein's/54 Below, featuring cocktails, dinner, and a one-night-only concert celebrating The Drama League and 100 years of service to the American Theatre. The Broadway company of the Tony Award-winning, record-breaking hit musical CHICAGO welcomes NFL Legend and Heisman Trophy winner Eddie George, who made his Broadway debut in the role of 'Billy Flynn' last night, January 12, 2016. Just yesterday, the company of Beautiful celebrated a milestone- two years on Broadway! Since opening on Broadway on January 12, 2014, Beautiful - The Carole King Musical, about the early life and career of the legendary and groundbreaking singer/songwriter has broken all box office records at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre, where it is now the highest grossing production in the theatre's history.  It recently passed the $100 million in grosses and is already the 27th highest grossing musical in Broadway history.  BroadwayWorld was there for the special day and you can check out photos below!

Friends in Theater Company and State of Play Productions' THE SECRET GARDEN, a Broadway benefit for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, presented the first of two sold-out performances last night, January 11, at 7:30 p.m. at the Lucille Lortel Theater. The fully staged production, directed/choreographed by Curtis Holbrook, was led by Rebecca Luker as Lily, Gabriella Pizzolo as Mary, and Bradley Dean as Archie with Tom Deckman, Ali Ewoldt, Frances Mercanti-Anthony, Bill Nolte, Eli Tokash, Max von Essen, and Cortney Wolfson. Additionally, composer Lucy Simon and original cast member Daisy Egan co-hosted the night.
