Artistic Partner Richard Egarr returns with a program that opens with works by British composers, including Benjamin Britten's evocative Serenade featuring tenor David Portillo and the SPCO's own Principal Horn, Jay Ferree. The concert bids farewell to England and continues with two beloved arias by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Finishing the program is Franz Schubert's 'Little C Major' Symphony - a deceptive nickname - it was Schubert's first fully symphonic work with a substantial wind section.

After 20 years of partnered bliss, Georges and Albin, two men partnered for better or worse, get a bit of both when Georges' son (fathered during a one-night fling) announces his impending marriage to the daughter of a bigoted, right-wing politician. Further complicating the situation is the 'family business': Albin and Georges run a drag nightclub in St. Tropez, where Albin is the star performer, 'Zaza.' Georges reluctantly agrees to masquerade as 'normal' when he meets the family of the bride-to-be. But Albin has other plans, with hilarious results.

Review: VIETGONE at Guthrie Theater
Review: VIETGONE at Guthrie Theater
September 29, 2022

What did our critic think of VIETGONE at Guthrie Theater? When Saigon falls in 1975, Quang and Tong, two Vietnamese refugees separated from their previous partners, have a sexy meet-cute in Arkansas that promptly becomes a no-strings-attached relationship to pass the time. Living in the land of 'cheeseburgers, waffle fries and cholesterol' (aka America) proves to be an intoxicating adventure that leads Quang and Tong to question their futures, both together and in their new country. Part history play and part memoir, this whip-smart comedy is punctuated with flashbacks and bursts of rap songs, all while giving unabashed reflections on American culture and offering a human-centered view of the Vietnam War and its aftermath.
