This year, the prestigious National Black Theatre Festival? will honor Jubilee Theatre Artistic Director Ed Smith with the festival's first annual Lloyd Richards' Director's Award. Smith is receiving this award because of his significant contributions to black theatre and American theatre in general. The festival will be held from August 3 through 8, 2009 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The theme for this year's festival remains the same as the past ten festivals: An International Celebration and Reunion of Spirit. Mr. Smith will be presented with the award at the Opening Night Gala Awards Banquet, which will be held on Monday, August 3.

Pianist Gabriela Montero brings her compelling interpretive and improvisational artistry to the Glenn Gould Studio for two performances on Wednesday April 1 and Thursday April 2, both at 8 pm. She will perform a selection of her Baroque-inspired improvisations along with improvisations built on suggestions from the audience.

The Geffen Playhouse welcomes back celebrated stage and screen actor John Mahoney (Frasier) for his second role in a Conor McPherson play at the Geffen Playhouse. After starring in the 2001 production of The Weir, Mahoney returns to play the role of Richard Harkin in The Seafarer, McPherson's 2008 Tony nominee for Best Play, which opens April 22 on the Geffen's main stage. Helmed by Geffen Playhouse Artistic Director Randall Arney, the ensemble cast also features seasoned actors Andrew Connolly, Tom Irwin, Paul Vincent O'Connor and Matt Roth.

Five years ago (on March 26, 2004 to be precise) 'Accidental Nostalgia' premiered at St. Anne's Warehouse to enthusiastic reviews and packed houses. The show's star, Cynthia Hopkins, became a celebrated figure in New York's alternative theater community, and the success of the show gave rise to 'The Accidental Trilogy,' which includes 'Must Don't Whip 'Um' (2007) and the forthcoming 'The Success of Failure (or The Failure of Success),' the third and final show in the trilogy which plays at St. Ann's Warehouse May 22 - June 7, 2009.

Young Audiences New York (YANY) will recognize four preeminent honorees for their contributions to the arts and advocacy of children's arts education at its 8th annual Children's Arts Award Benefit, to be held Monday, March 9 at Cipriani - Wall Street. The New York Times reports the sad news that Horton Foote, who chronicled America's many voices and many lives and who will leave a dramatic and literary legacy as one of the country's greatest storytellers, has passed away today in Hartford, Connecticut. He was 92, said his daughter Hallie Foote.

Broadway favorite and recent Los Angeles transplant Barrett Foa will be a guest star on the CBS series 'NUMB3RS' on Friday, March 6 at 10pm (EST and PST).
