In 1968, Mart Crowley's viciously funny play 'The Boys in the Band' opened off-Broadway and created a sensation among New York theatre-goers. It stimulated a new awareness of Gay Culture, which became a catalyst for the Stonewall riots a few months later, and we've never been the same since! In 1970, it was a highly successful film directed by William Friedkin (The French Connection, The Exorcist), featured the original NY cast and was seen by millions worldwide. A brand new film documentary chronicling the The Making of the Boys and its impact was a hit at the recent Ft. Lauderdale Gay and Lesbian Film Festival.

Now showing in Theatre 2 at Stage Door Theatre is "Steel Magnolias", the beloved play that was also made into a Blockbuster Film starring Julia Roberts. This production is directed by Michael Leeds, whose recent outings at the Stage Door include hits like last season's "A Little Night Music", and most recently, "Mack and Mabel".

The Waterfront Playhouse announces auditions for 'The New Century' by Paul Rudnick, which is part of their 2010/11 season. The auditions will be held on Thursday, October 14, 6:30 to 8:00 pm at the Waterfront Playhouse. Director Rich Simone will be looking for five experienced comedic actors between the ages of 20 to 60. The play requires actors who are comfortable with the verbal demands of the script, as well as fitting the specific types of the characters. All of the roles are open and all are paid.

'To bring the meaning and message of CABARET to life, particularly to younger audiences, we are inviting local Holocaust survivors to attend matinee performances of the show on October 16, 17 and 23, and then participate in a post-show feedback session with members of the audience and cast,' says producer Vicki Halmos. 'CABARET is a wonderful show, but one with disturbing undertones that merit full discussion.'

Described by Stephen King as 'the quintessential ghost story,' The Turn of the Screw was originally published in serialized form and eventually became one of James' most famous works. James added a new spin to the traditional ghost story by writing it entirely from the governess' perspective, leaving the reader to interpret her account's accuracy and truthfulness. More than a century later, critical debate rages on over the nature of the ghosts, the complicity of the children, and the sanity of the governess.

That's the comic premise that drives 'Killing Kevin Spacey,' which won the 'Best of Fringe' Awards in Edmonton, Toronto and Winnipeg. The Broward Center for the Performing Arts and DeNiro & Wolf Productions present the production in its U.S. premiere as part of the Arts Access Program on Friday, October 29 and Saturday, October 30 at 8 p.m. in the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center.

Legendary impressionist, Christopher Peterson brings his stage extravaganza 'EYECONS, Las Vegas or Bust' to the Waterfront Playhouse for three nights only, playing October 23, 24 and 25 at 8 pm. This official Fantasy Fest event will mark Christopher's final Key West appearances before relocating to Las Vegas. His all-live, no lip-sync show features hilarious parodies of all the great female stars, plus four dancers, over-the-top costumes and Vegas-style sets. The Waterfront, as one of Fantasy Fest's premier sponsors, is thrilled that Christopher chose the Playhouse as the venue for his Key West performing swan song.

Barry Ingham has appeared on both the West End and Broadway starring in such classics as The Magistrate and Tartuffe and original productions of Aspects of Love and Jekyll & Hyde. As a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, Mr. Ingham appeared in several productions including Julius Caesar, Twelfth Night, and Winter's Tale. He was professor at the University of Texas at Austin, theatre consultant to Baylor University and is artistic advisor to the Shakespeare Society of New York.

Reach Dance Company collaborates with their friends to produce an evening of dance, music, laughter and all things performance. Mel Brooks has taken a giant tumble off the mountaintop on which he stood following the success of THE PRODUCERS. To think about it, THE PRODUCERS revealed itself not to be one of the greats as soon as Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick departed. Performers mean an awful lot in a Broadway musical. It seems the Brooks machine is willing to trade gifted star performers (they got to be stars for a reason, you know) for a more immediate return of profit. Seems to be unwise for them, and certainly not a reason for the audience to rejoice. But, on to the show.

Based on Damon Runyon's short story The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown, GUYS AND DOLLS tells the story of a group of small-time gamblers and the ladies in their lives. Nathan Detroit, the organizer of the oldest established permanent floating crap game in New York, bets fellow gambler Sky Masterson that he can't make the next 'doll' he sees fall in love with him. The next 'doll' to enter happens to be the prim and proper neighborhood missionary, Miss Sarah Brown, and the stage is set for a heavy dose of high spirited entertainment set to the toe-tapping beat of Frank Loesser's superlative score.

Spotlights will race across the sky, ticket holders will arrive on a red carpet, and the celebration of the Broward Center's 20th anniversary year will be launched Wednesday, October 6, at 8 P.M. with the season premiere of THE NEW MEL BROOKS MUSICAL YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN marking the first salvo of the excitingly diverse 2010 2011 Broadway Across America-Fort Lauderdale 8-musical theatrical season, presented by the Florida Theatrical Association at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.
