Vortex Theater Company (Joshua Randall, Artistic Director) is set to present A Midsummer Nightmare, an off-season haunted house running May 22 – June 13, 2009 at the Sanford Meisner Theater (164 Eleventh Avenue, between 22/23). The event will run 7:00pm-11:00pm Wednesday – Sunday and tickets are $6 at the door. A limited number of online “Advanced VIP” tickets, which enable holders to jump to the front of the line, are $12 and are available at www.theatermania.com.
A Midsummer Nightmare will contain graphic sexual and violent content. No one under 18 will be admitted unless they have a parent's or guardian's consent. A form will be available at the box office and parents must be present.
Following the Vortex’ controversial re-imagining of Kander and Ebb’s Kiss of the Spider Woman, and the Drama Desk nominated adaptation of HMS Pinafore, the Vortex Theater Company will continue to push the boundaries of contemporary theater by offering an off-season haunted house. Following in the bloody footsteps of “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and “Saw”, comes A Midsummer Nightmare. The experiential haunted house will take over the newly renovated Sanford Meisner Theater and transform the space into a maze of horror scenes, all designed to be walked through alone. The entire experience will last anywhere between 5 - 10 minutes per person.
Vortex Theater Company (www.vortextheater.com) was founded in 1983 and is dedicated to creating provocative theatrical experiences for a contemporary audience. Under the artistic direction of Joshua Randall since 2005, the Vortex has produced Agamemnon (2006 Drama Desk nomination for “Outstanding Director of a Play”); The Story of HMS Pinafore (2007 Drama Desk nomination for “Outstanding Revival of a Musical”); the first NY production since the Broadway run of Kander and Ebb’s Kiss of the Spider Woman - The Musical, In Delirum: after the sorrows of young werther (NY I.T. Award nomination “Outstanding Solo Performance”), Bathsheba Doran’s adaptation of Maeterlink’s The Blind on the Frying Pan as well as its extension with Classic Stage Company (NY I.T. Award nominations “Outstanding Sound {and} Costume Design”); and many others.
