As you may recall, last week BroadwayWorld posted this terrific video of the cast of JERSEY BOYS, in front of their August Wilson Theatre, welcoming the new Neil Simon Theatre residents, the cast of CATS, into the neighborhood with a special Doo-Wop arrangement of their classic 11 o'clocker, "Memory."
The performance was part of the JERSEY BOYS' traditional Saturday Night Scream.
Well, the Cats caught on quickly and decided that when on 52nd Street, they'll do what the 52nd Streeters do, so this past Saturday the Nine Lives set serenaded the Four Seasons crew with a special JERSEY BOYS version of their opening number, "Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats."
The current production of CATS marks the first New York revival of the beloved musical. Since its world premiere, Cats has been presented in over 30 countries, has been translated into 15 languages, and has been seen by more than 73 million people worldwide. Originally directed by Trevor Nunn, a West End production premiered in 1981. The musical debuted on Broadway in 1982 where it won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Both the original London and Broadway cast recordings won GRAMMY AWARDS for Best Cast Album. Cats hit song "Memory" has been recorded by over 150 artists from Barbra Streisand and Johnny Mathis to Liberace and Barry Manilow. The Tony Award-winning Best Musical held the title of longest- running musical in Broadway history until it was surpassed in 2006 by Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera. The original Broadway production closed on September 10, 2000 and is currently the fourth longest-running show in Broadway history.
JERSEY BOYS is the behind-the-music story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. They were just four guys from Jersey, until they sang their very first note. They had a sound nobody had ever heard... and the radio just couldn't get enough of. But while their harmonies were perfect on stage, off stage it was a very different story -- a story that has made them an international sensation all over again. The show features all their hits including "Sherry," "Big Girls Don't Cry," "Oh What A Night," "Walk Like A Man," "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" and "Working My Way Back To You."
JERSEY BOYS is the recipient of the 2006 Tony Award for Best Musical and the 2009 Olivier Award for Best Musical. The Original Broadway Cast Recording, produced by Bob Gaudio, received the 2006 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album and has been certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The Broadway production also won the 2006 Outer Critics Circle & Drama League Awards for Best Musical. The London production also won the 2009 UK People's Choice and What's on Stage Awards for Best New Musical. The Toronto production is the winner of three Dora Awards, including the Audience Choice Award for Outstanding Production. The Australian production is 2010 recipient of the Helpmann Award for Australia's Best Musical and seven Victorian Green Room Awards. The South African production is the 2014 recipient of the 3 South Africa Naledi Theatre Awards including Best Musical.
