Lonely introverts like the title character of the Broadway bound DEAR EVAN HANSEN are not often found at the center of musical, but in past projects like their scores for DOGFIGHT and A CHRISTMAS STORY, composer/lyricists Benj Pasek and Justin Paul have shown a keen ability to write songs that get to the hearts of characters.

After opening Off-Broadway at Second Stage, they received a 2016 Obie Award for the score of DEAR EVAN HANSEN and the song "Waving Through A Window," as sung in the musical by Obie-winner Ben Platt, has already achieved great acclaim as a character portrait.

In the video, the pair explain what goes into writing such a portrait.

The highly anticipated Broadway premiere of the original musical Dear Evan Hansen begins previews on Monday, November 14, 2016 and will officially open at the Belasco Theatre (111 West 44th Street) on Sunday, December 4, 2016.

All his life, Evan Hansen has felt invisible. But when a tragic event shocks the community and thrusts him into the center of a rapidly evolving controversy, Evan is given the opportunity of a lifetime: the chance to be somebody else. A new American musical, DEAR EVAN HANSEN is a deeply personal and profoundly contemporary story about a little lie that changes everything.

Once you've seen it, you will be moved. You will be changed. You will be found.

With a book by Obie Award-winner Steven Levenson, score by Tony Award nominees Benj Pasek & Justin Paul, and direction by three-time Tony Award nominee Michael Greif, Dear Evan Hansen had its world premiere at Arena Stage, Washington D.C., this past summer and recently concluded its record-breaking New York debut at Off-Broadway's Second Stage.

Ben Platt, who led the world and New York premieres of the musical, will once again star as Evan Hansen, a performance for which he recently won the 2016 Obie Award and earned nominations from the Drama League and Outer Critics Circle Awards. Platt will be joined by Laura Dreyfuss, Rachel Bay Jones, Jennifer Laura Thompson, Mike Faist, Michael Park, Will Roland and Kristolyn Lloyd.
