Update: PRINCE ON BROADWAY Still Struggling to Find Investors; Hoping for 2016 Bow

As BroadwayWorld previously reported, PRINCE OF BROADWAY, the new musical celebrating legendary Broadway director and producer Harold "Hal" Prince has been postponed indefinitely due to scheduling conflicts. Now according to the New York Times, the musical is having trouble raising the funds to open on Broadway.

Director Susan Stroman commented: "I still can't get over the fact that at the last Tony Awards ceremony, 5,000 people leapt to their feet to give Hal a standing ovation, but none of them were willing to join us on 'Prince of Broadway. I just thought: 'What? What? All this love, but we can't raise the money?' "

Initial producer Aubrey Dan told NYT: "If Hal Prince wants his story on Broadway right now, he can write the check. And he has more than enough money to do that. And if he does, it will be a huge seller. But does he have the guts to do it?"

Prince himself remains more positive on the subject, commenting: "Everything's going very well with developing the show, and we'll have the financing, and we'll do four weeks in Tokyo and then open on Broadway in early 2016."

The musical will open at the Umeda Arts Theater in 2015, featuring previously announced Susan Stroman at the helm, and cast members Sierra Boggess, Emily Skinner and Richard Kind. Linda Lavin, who was originally signed on will no longer be a part of the cast due to a conflict with an upcoming television show.

The show was originally scheduled to open in Toronto, as a part of the Dancap Productions 2012 season, prior to a Broadway production in November 2012. In January 2012, the Toronto enagement was cancelled and later that spring it was revealed in a statement from representatives that it would 'continue without Dancap's involvement.'

In March 2012 it was announced that the Broadway production woud star Linda Lavin, Sebastian Arcelus, Sierra Boggess, Daniel Breaker, Josh Grisetti, Shuler Hensley, Richard Kind, Amanda Kloots-Larsen, LaChanze, Caroline O'Connor, David Pittu and Emily Skinner.

Then in May 2012 it was announced that the show had been delayed from the Fall of 2012 to the Fall of 2013 as the production hunted for new producers. The production was to be directed by 21-time Tony Award winner Harold Prince, co-directed and choreographed by 5-time Tony Award winner Susan Stroman, and features a book by Tony Award nominee David Thompson.

In November 2012 it was announced the the production had been picked up by Tom Viertel and Richard Frankel who were aiming to bring the show to New York in the fall. There is no word yet on when the show will move forward.
