Welcome to BroadwayWorld's Tony Award Countdown: 30 Years In 30 Days, a look at some of the Tony Awards' most memorable moments from the past three decades.
"You haven't aged a bit," Harvey Fierstein quipped to his 2003 Best Actor In A Musical Tony, having last been presented with the treasured medallion nineteen years earlier for writing the book of LA CAGE AUX FOLLES. Not one to repeat himself, Fierstein previously won the Best Play and Best Actor In A Play honors in '83 for TORCH SONG TRILOGY.
On the other hand, his HAIRSPRAY co-star, Marissa Jaret Winokur, enjoyed her first step into the Tony spotlight, taking the Best Actress In A Musical prize for her first starring role in only her second Broadway show.
HAIRSPRAY cleaned up that year, taking Best Musical, as well as nods for Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan's book, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman's score, Jack O'Brien's direction, William Ivey Long's costumes and Dick Latessa's supporting performance.
The full company performance of "You Can't Stop The Beat" spotlighted Broadway favorites like Mary Bond Davis and Linda Hart, as well as emerging stars like Matthew Morrison, Kerry Butler, Laura Bell Bundy, Shoshana Bean and Jackie Hoffman.
The American Theatre Wing's 70th Annual Tony Awards, hosted by Tony Award winner James Corden, will air on the CBS Television Network on Sunday, June 12, 2016 (8:00-11:00 PM, ET/delayed PT) live from the Beacon Theatre in New York City.
