Welcome to BroadwayWorld's final 2016 edition of Tony Award Countdown: 30 Years In 30 Days, a look at some of the Tony Awards' most memorable moments from the past three decades.
When Lisa Kron and Jeanine Tesori's FUN HOME, based on Alison Bechdel's graphic memoir, won the 2015 Tony Award for Best Musical, it was the first time a musical completely written by women was so honored. And when the authors won for Best Book and Best Score, it was also the first time women swept those awards.
FUN HOME was the first attempt at writing a musical for the playwright/star of WELL and THE 2.5 MINUTE RIDE, and in accepting her award for Best Book she made a poignant remark about how the family of Broadway tends to stay in one or two main rooms of a big house, and how amazing it would be to keep exploring the others.
This season is being celebrated as having the most diverse representation of artists Broadway has ever seen. New rooms are definitely being explored, with many more to come.
The American Theatre Wing's 70th Annual Tony Awards, hosted by Tony Award winner James Corden, will air on the CBS Television Network tonight, Sunday, June 12, 2016 (8:00-11:00 PM, ET/delayed PT) live from the Beacon Theatre in New York City.
Based on Alison Bechdel's best-selling graphic memoir, Fun Home features music by Jeanine Tesori, book and lyrics by Lisa Kron and direction by Sam Gold, whose work on this production earned them Tony Awards for Best Score, Best Book and Best Direction. Fun Home is currently playing to sold-out crowds at the Circle in the Square Theatre (235 West 50th Street), and was was the first Broadway show of the 2014-2015 season to recoup financially, doing so in only eight months.
