The Nominations Announcement will take place on Wednesday, May 1, 2019. The winners will be announced on Tuesday, May 22, 2019, and the awards ceremony will be held on Tuesday, June 18, 2019.
The Off Broadway Alliance is a non-profit corporation organized by theater professionals dedicated to supporting, promoting and encouraging the production of Off Broadway theater and to making live theater increasingly accessible to new and diverse audiences. The Alliance holds monthly meetings and membership is open to everyone in the Off Broadway theater community. The organization consists of Off Broadway producers, theaters, general managers, press agents, and marketing professionals, and the OBA Awards honor commercial and not-for-profit productions that opened Off Broadway during the 2018-2019 season.
Awards will be presented in seven competitive categories: Best New Musical, Best New Play, Best Musical Revival, Best Play Revival, Best Unique Theatrical Experience, Best Solo Performance, and Best Family Show. Winners in all categories will be selected by secret ballot by members of the awards committee of the Off Broadway Alliance.
In addition to the competitive awards, the Alliance will present its Legend of Off Broadway awards for sustained achievement in the theatre and will posthumously induct new honorees into the Off Broadway Hall of Fame.
Past winners at the OBA Awards include Indecent, Billy Crudup in Harry Clarke, Desperate Measures, Sense & Sensibility, Fun Home, and KPOP. Legend of Off Broadway honorees include veteran actors Estelle Parsons and Andre De Shields, director Jo Bonney, and legendary press agent Merle Debuskey. Off Broadway Hall of Fame inductees include theatrical attorney Donald Farber, Signature Theatre founder James Houghton, and actress and comedian Anne Meara.
The Off Broadway Alliance sponsors 20at20, the twice-yearly 20-day event that lets theatergoers purchase $20 tickets to dozens of Off Broadway shows 20 minutes before curtain. It also produces regular Saturday Seminars focusing on the business and history of Off Broadway, featuring major players from the Off Broadway scene. The Alliance also operates the OBA Mentorship Program, which provides new producers with guidance and direction from Off Broadway veterans.
