Student Blog: What Does Musical Theatre Mean to You?

This is one question. Yet, one question holds a myriad of answers. How do we respond to this? We go back to the basics. We try to search for answers in their most complex forms, when in fact we should be looking for them in their most simplest forms. Simplicity goes with the purest of things. What makes you smile? Do you feel at home? Do you feel natural when doing things or do you feel forced? Does it feel like new every time?

There is no universal answer. Yet everyone holds their own truth. I will now answer with my truth. No one else can feel my truth the exact same way. I am the only one who has the key to this knowledge. To express the meaning of theatre, I will express myself through art.

That feeling of flying

Theatre, music, joy

Do you know what it's like for your soul to be lifted high

Up in the air while the stakes are so high

I didn't know that I would be allowed

To share this feeling

Yet

Somehow

The world was one door away

The theatre was the key

To the paradise I craved.

That feeling of comfort

That feeling of life

That feeling that you are a part of something

That feeling that you know you belong

The first time I fell in love with the art

Commenced when I heard that beautiful sound

There was dreamy melody

With a harmony of truth and despair

No life is one happy tale

There are hardships that need to be fought

Theatre shows new energies

It brings a new light

To problems we don't think about

But need to be talked about

When I watch things unfold on stage

I know that we can find a new way

To solve the worlds troubles

Even if it might be light years away

Now, my first day as a performer

I knew theatre impacted me for the better

What I didn't know was

The power it had over others

My voice creates a space of peace

My voice creates a space of hope

I am aware that I can reach all my goals

I will always have theatre to hold

No matter in what shape or form

I decide to be a part of it

It will always be there as my new home

Musical theatre brings to the world a unique experience where: when words are indescribable or aren't enough, we sing. It makes the impossible possible. It gives us a space to believe.

I wanted to take this opportunity to reflect and fully think about this art and what makes it so compelling. I have my motives for falling in love with musical theatre every single day, while others have different motives. In the end, what I can say for sure is that this art brings people together. Musical theatre creates a place for each and every individual in this world. It will be your friend along the way till the day you're old.
