Student Blog: The 20th Anniversary of the Tribeca Film Festival- A Celebration to Film, Music, and Art

The twentieth anniversary of New York City's Tribeca Film Festival began on June 9th and went through June 20th. It was the first major North American festival with in-person screenings since the start of the pandemic. This live occasion incorporated innovative experiences involving TV, gaming, art, and film. All through lower Manhattan, screenings were set up in public venues, such as in The Battery, Pier 76, Hudson Yards, and many more. Community screenings were also hosted throughout the boroughs, including the Bronx and Queens, using traveling, 40-foot screens. I had the amazing and grateful opportunity to attend the exclusive premieres of great films and actor interview panels.

The festival opened with a bang! Jon M. Chu's big-screen transformation of In The Heights-the Tony-winning Broadway musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegría Hudes started the festival with concurrent screenings across the city. This film is a sweet-hued musical love letter to summer in New York City. What better movie to start the union of getting back together after a rough year? The audience laughed, cried, and danced throughout the park. It was such an incredible ambiance to feel and take in.

What famous faces were in this year's attendance? Many actors and musicians dropped in to promote their latest films and talk about their passions to continue in the art world. Tina Fey, John Legend, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Dave Chappelle, and the legendary band KISS were just a few of the list of artists at the festival.

With over a large number of new shows and films presented at this event, one film, in particular, caught my attention and surprised me all the way to the end. No Sudden Move, the latest from director Steven Soderbergh-starring Don Cheadle, Benicio Del Toro, Jon Hamm, David Harbor, and Kieran Culkin-premiered as the festival's Centerpiece Gala selection. It's a thrill ride that follows a group of convicts whose most recent heist goes wrong, leaving to reveal the secret of who recruited them and why. Getting to see the actors before the film excited and animated the crowd for an astonishing and brilliant film that is worth watching. The cinematography, the musical score, and on top acting created an overall captivating work of art that is rarely seen now in days. The movie will be released in theaters and on HBO Max on July 1st.

The Tribeca Film festival was founded in 2002 by Robert De Niro and other co-founders in the aftermath of 9/11. Its purpose was to improve and restore lower Manhattan's economic and cultural brace through an annual celebration of film, music, and culture. On its 20th anniversary, it has helped and gained positive effort and word because of its wonderful message, which influences people for the better. It shows the impactful side of coming back together after tragic events. We can always get back up. I couldn't wait to do it all over again and attend next year's Tribeca Film Festival.
