Plus an all-star cast of Cecily Strong, Keegan Michael-Key, Dove Cameron, Kristin Chenoweth, Aaron Tveit, Ariana DeBose, Alan Cumming and more.
Last Friday, the first two episodes of the new musical comedy television series "Schmigadoon" aired - and I think I've found my new favorite thing. The comedy stars Cecily Strong and Keegan Michael Key as Melissa and Josh, two Doctors who've sought couples' counseling after recent struggles in their relationship. On a counseling retreat, they stray from the rest of the couples and suddenly find themselves in a town called "Schmigadoon" where life is one big musical. Dove Cameron, Kristin Chenoweth, Aaron Tveit, Ariana DeBose and Alan Cumming also star.
"Schmigadoon" could have been a boring parody of golden age musicals, but this show was done so well. It's chock full of references (so far I've clocked Oklahoma, Carousel, and The Music Man.) But the genius of it is in the cross between modern and classic/simple comedy styles that are used. Cecily and Keegan are both titans of comedy - specifically sketch comedy - and the energy they bring to the screen is refreshingly witty and quick. Their sketch experience has given them the ability to genre jump so effortlessly, which makes them the perfect pair to lead this ensemble.
The rest of the cast are seasoned musical theatre performers (and some legends) - and the consistency of their talent is so necessary for this concept to work. Melissa and Josh enter a perfectly polished world of happiness and music, and the residents of the town should be and are just that; perfectly polished.
If you're looking for a new obsession that satisfies your love of musicals and silly comedies, I definitely recommend checking out this show. New episodes are available to stream on AppleTV, and the first two are already released. If you need any more convincing, the trailer below will have you hooked.
