The Dramatists Guild of America presented their annual awards on Monday, February 22, 2016, at The American Airlines Theatre Penthouse Lobby in New York. Preceding the awards event was the ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony of the new Mary Rodgers Room at the Guild's 1501 Broadway office. Scroll down for photos from both events!
Marsha Norman, longtime friend of Mary Rodgers and Council member of the Guild, spoke about Rodgers and officially opened the room, which will be used as a rental space, seminar space and meeting space for the Guild Council. The room will be funded in perpetuity by a grant from Marsha Norman and Stephen Sondheim.
Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony, the Guild held their annual meeting and then the awards presentations. This year's awards went to Stephen Adly Guirgis, recipient of the Hull-Warriner Award for his play Between Riverside and Crazy; Lin-Manuel Miranda, recipient of the Frederick Loewe Award for Dramatic Composition for his score to Hamilton; Dael Orlandersmith, recipient of the Flora Roberts Award; Lauren Gunderson, recipient of the Lanford Wilson Award; and Stephen Schwartz and Marsha Norman, co-recipients of the Dramatists Guild Career Achievement Award. The Guild also presented for the first time the new Horton Foote Playwriting Award, sponsored by the Richenthal Foundation, to playwright Stephen Karam.
The Dramatists Legal Defense Fund presented their third DLDF Defender Award to Edward J. Davis Esq. of Davis Wright Tremaine, an attorney who successfully defended playwright David Adjmi in his fair use case regarding his play 3C.
Award presenters included Jeanine Tesori, David Richenthal, Stephen McKinley Henderson, JT Rogers, Gretchen Cryer, Jeffrey Sweet, John Weidman and Scott Schwartz. DG Council President Doug Wright was the evening's host and past president Stephen Schwartz concluded the evening with his song "Can You Imagine That?"
