For the second time in three weeks, The Lion King has set the box office record at its new home at the Minskoff Theatre by grossing $1,225,189 during the week of June 26 - July 2, beating the Minskoff's record for both eight and nine-performance weeks. The previous record was held by The Lion King during the week of June 12 - June 18, the show's first week at the theatre, with a gross of $1,194,854.
Since opening on Broadway in 1997,
The Lion King is the winner of over 70 major awards worldwide and has become a global phenomenon seen by nearly 34 million people. In addition to New York City, where the record-breaking show is soon entering its tenth year of sold out performances, the show can also be seen in London, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Tokyo and two touring companies throughout the United States. Later this summer, the show will premiere at the Shanghai Grand Theatre in China on July 18 and in Seoul, South Korea on August 28.
The Lion King, directed by Julie Taymor and choreographed by Garth Fagan, features music by Elton John, lyrics by Tim Rice, a book by Roger Allers and Irene Mecchi, sets by Richard Hudson, costumes by Taymor, mask and puppet design by Taymor and Michael Curry, and sound design by Tony Meola.
