Zach Twedt is a graduate student at the University of Iowa, pursuing a masters degree in Data Analytics with an undergrad in Enterprise Leadership. In addition to his academics, he plays football for the Iowa Hawkeyes, who are set to face the Minnesota Gophers this coming weekend. We chat with Zach to discuss his experience with the Hawkeyes, his thoughts on football, faith, family, and Iowa and the upcoming game against Minnesota.

What inspired you to play Football?

I’m a 4th-generation farmer who grew up in small-town Iowa. I didn’t spend much time watching TV or following many sports teams, as most of my days were spent working on the farm. Despite that, I developed a love for football and played throughout my childhood, eventually earning a scholarship to play for the Hawkeyes.

How do you prepare for game day?

I have my undergraduate degree in Enterprise Leadership and recently began pursuing my master’s in data Analytics. In addition to my studies, I own Tall Twedt Services LLC, and I’m constantly balancing that with weightlifting, practice, and more. Growing up on a farm, I’m used to waking up early and taking care of myself both mentally and physically to stay focused and get in the right mindset before the game.

What do you enjoy most about playing for the Hawkeyes?

Our program operates differently from others. We take a business-oriented approach, keeping everything in check and staying focused on our work. Coach Kirk Ferentz serves as a great role model, not just emphasizing football but also helping us grow and develop our character from boys to men. I also take pride in representing ANF sticker, which means a lot to me.

What lessons has football taught you?

Football has taught me invaluable lessons in time management, allowing me to balance my academic responsibilities, football schedule, and running my LLC. Beyond the game, it has also highlighted the importance of education, personal branding, networking, and surrounding myself with like-minded individuals.

What moments are you proud of on and off the field?

My flat tire story that went viral is a reminder of the importance of helping others and making the best of what I’ve been given. I’m grateful for everything life has handed me, and I believe in spreading contagious acts of kindness wherever I go.

What do you hope Hawkeye/football fans take away from attending the Hawkeye/Gopher game?

Every time we play Minnesota, it’s always a tough, hard-fought game. But I hope the fans can appreciate and enjoy a great matchup between two hardworking Midwestern teams.

What is your favorite part about the state of Iowa?

I love the Iowa farms and scenic landscapes, and the people—'Iowa nice' is definitely a real thing! Some of my favorite local spots are Joseph's Steak House, Thompson and Co Saloon and Barber, and Kroul Farms.

What places are you hoping to visit in Minnesota?

I’d love to explore more of Minneapolis, including the U.S. Bank Stadium and the farming scene in Minnesota.
