Glenn Close to Return to Broadway Opposite Lithgow, Duncan, Balaban, Higgins & Plimpton in Edward Albee's A DELICATE BALANCE

Glenn Close, John Lithgow, Lindsay Duncan, Bob Balaban, Clare Higgins, and Martha Plimpton will star in a new Broadway production of Edward Albee's A Delicate Balance this fall at the Golden Theatre (252 West 45th Street). The production, which will be directed by Pam MacKinnon, begins previewsMonday, October 20 and plays an 18-week limited engagement through Sunday, February 22, 2015. Opening night is Thursday, November 20.

In A DELICATE BALANCE, Agnes (Glenn Close) and Tobias (John Lithgow), a long-married couple, must maintain their equilibrium as over the course of a weekend they welcome home their 36-year-old daughter (Martha Plimpton) after the collapse of her fourth marriage, and give shelter to their best friends (Bob Balaban and Clare Higgins), all the while tolerating Agnes' alcoholic sister Claire (Lindsay Duncan).

A DELICATE BALANCE won Edward Albee his first of three Pulitzer Prizes for Drama when it opened on Broadway in 1966. The New York Times has called A DELICATE BALANCE "An evening of theatrical fireworks as ferocious and funny as-and far more humane than-Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf." The Telegraph declared the play "A modern classic with depth, daring, and originality," while The New York Posthas described it as "Brilliantly corroding and laceratingly witty." Time called the play "A haunting parable of disconnection and existential terror," and The Daily News hailed it as "Albee's best and most mature work." In reviewing A DELICATE BALANCE, Variety described the play as "...a deliciously astringent attack on safety and self-satisfaction, an exposure of the responsibilities of living, and a lethal, laugh-out-loud comedy. It is Albee's mature masterpiece."

This production marks Glenn Close's return to the New York stage after a twenty-year absence. A three-time Tony Award-winner, hailed by The New York Times as "one of our finest actresses-dazzling and infinitely resourceful," Miss Close last appeared on Broadway in the musical Sunset Boulevard. Joining Miss Close are two-time Tony Award-winner John Lithgow-who will star this summer in the title role of the Public Theater's production of King Lear at the Delacorte Theatre-and Lindsay Duncan, who last appeared on Broadway in Private Lives, winning a Tony Award for her performance.

A DELICATE BALANCE will have scenic design by Santo Loquasto, costume design by Ann Roth, and lighting design by Brian MacDevitt.

PAM MacKINNON won the Tony Award for her direction of Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf. Miss MacKinnon won an Obie Award and was nominated for the Tony and Lucille Lortel Awards for her direction of Bruce Norris' Clybourne Park. She is a frequent interpreter of the plays of Edward Albee, having directed At Home at the Zoo (formerly titled Peter and Jerry) at the Second Stage Theatre and Hartford Stage Company; Occupant (Signature Theatre Company); The Goat, or Who is Sylvia? (Alley Theatre); and The Play About the Baby (Goodman Theatre, Philadelphia Theatre Company). Her many off-Broadway credits include the recent productions of Craig Lucas' The Lying Lesson at the Atlantic Theatre Company, Donald Margulies' Dinner with Friends for the Roundabout, and currently, Sarah Treem's When We Were Young and Unafraid at Manhattan Theatre Club.

A DELICATE BALANCE will be produced on Broadway by Scott Rudin.

GLENN CLOSE won Tony Awards for her performances in Sunset Boulevard, Death and the Maiden, andThe Real Thing. She made her professional theatre and Broadway debut in Harold Prince's production of Love for Love. Her early stage credits include The Crucifer of Blood, The Singular Life of Albert Nobbs (Obie Award), the musical Barnum (Tony Award nomination), and Benefactors. She is a six-time Academy Award nominee for her performances in the films The World According to Garp, The Big Chill, The Natural, Fatal Attraction, Dangerous Liaisons, and Albert Nobbs (which she also co-wrote and produced). Miss Close won two Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe Award for her performance on the TV series Damages, and an Emmy Award for her performance in the title role in Serving in Silence: The Margarethe Cammermeyer Story, which she also co-produced. She recently completed filming on four features: Low Down, 5 to 7, Anesthesia, and the feature film adaptation of Marvel Comics' Guardians of the Galaxy.

JOHN LITHGOW won Tony Awards for his performances in The Changing Room and Sweet Smell of Success. Mr. Lithgow received back-to-back Academy Awards nominations for his performances in the films The World According to Garp and Terms Of Endearment. On television, he is best known for his portrayal of Dick Solomon on the NBC series Third Rock From the Sun, for which he won three Emmy Awards, the Golden Globe Award, two SAG Awards, and The American Comedy Award. More recently, he won an Emmy Award for his performance on Dexter. Mr. Lithgow is the author of nine New York Times best-selling children's picture books and a memoir, Drama: An Actor's Education, which focuses on his early life and career. Lithgow will next be seen on the big screen in August in Love is Strange, and will also co-star in Interstellar and The Homesman. This summer he will star in the title role in the Shakespeare in the Park production of King Lear.

LINDSAY DUNCAN won a Tony Award for her performance in Private Lives. Her London stage credits include Hay Fever, That Face, Mouth to Mouth, The Homecoming, The Cryptogram, Three Hotels, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof(Evening Standard Award), The Merry Wives of Windsor, Troilus and Cressida, Top Girls, Julius Caesar, and Plenty. Miss Duncan's film and TV credits include Alice in Wonderland, Afterlife (Bowmore Scottish Screen Award), Under the Tuscan Sun, Mansfield Park, An Ideal Husband, A Midsummer Night's Dream, the HBO series Rome; Poirot: The Mystery of the Blue Train; Oliver Twist; A Year in Provence; Reilly Ace of Spies; and Richard II in the BBC's The Hollow Crown series.

BOB BALABAN has appeared on Broadway in Plaza Suite, The Inspector General (Tony Award nomination), and Speed-the-Plow. Off-Broadway, he directed and produced the award-winning production of The Exonerated, which garnered the Drama Desk Award, the Outer Critics Circle Award, and the Lucille Lortel Award. He has appeared in nearly one hundred films including The Grand Budapest Hotel, Moonrise Kingdom,Capote, A Mighty Wind, Best in Show, Waiting for Guffman, Absence of Malice, Prince of the City, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Catch-22, and Midnight Cowboy. He has received many nominations for his work as a producer and director, including an Academy Award nomination for the film Gosford Park, which he produced, and DGA and Emmy nominations for his direction of HBO's Bernard and Doris, and Lifetime's Georgia O'Keeffe. In addition, Mr. Balaban is the author of the bestselling series of children's books, McGrowl. His new series, The Creature from the Seventh Grade, is currently available from Viking.

CLARE HIGGINS was nominated for a Tony Award for her performance in Vincent in Brixton, which she originated at the National Theatre in London. Miss Higgins is the winner of three Olivier Awards for her performances in Vincent in Brixton, Sweet Bird of Youth, and Hecuba. Her film and TV credits include the Philip Pullman adaptation The Golden Compass; Woody Allen's Cassandra's Dream; Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont; Stage Beauty; House of Mirth; Hellraiser, and Hellbound: Hellraiser II; Downton Abbey; Shameless; and Parade's End.

MARTHA PLIMPTON most recently starred in the London premiere of Other Desert Cities. She was nominated for Tony and Drama Desk awards for her performances in Pal Joey (Roundabout Theatre Company),Top Girls (Manhattan Theatre Club), and The Coast of Utopia (Lincoln Center Theater). Miss Plimpton won an Obie Award and was nominated for a Lucille Lortel Award for her performance in Hobson's Choice (Atlantic Theatre Company). Her TV credits include a starring role on the FOX series Raising Hope, for which she received an Emmy nomination and won two Critics' Choice Television Awards. In addition, she garnered an Emmy Award for her role on the CBS series The Good Wife and an Emmy nomination for her role on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. She has appeared in over 30 films.
