As reported by BroadwayWorld, Roundabout Theatre Company (Todd Haimes, Artistic Director), in association with Daryl Roth Productions, has just announced the first-ever New York revival of Alfred Uhry and Robert Waldman's musical comedy THE ROBBER BRIDEGROOM as part of the 50th Anniversary Season.
The production will feature Steven Pasquale (The Bridges of Madison County) as Jamie Lockhart, direction by Tony award nominee Alex Timbers (Peter and the Starcatcher) and choreography by Connor Gallagher.
For Flashback Friday, let's go back to the original Broadway production of THE ROBBER BRIDEGROOM and its return to Broadway engagement.
Set in Mississippi's Natchez Trace, THE ROBBER BRIDGROOM began in New York as a workshop production produced by Stuart Ostro. Raul Julia starred as Jamie Lockhart, whose kindly disposition by day masks his true identity as a bandit of the woods by night. His plot to rob a wealthy planter goes askew when he falls for his target's beautiful daughter, Rosamund, played by Rhonda Coullet.
The distinguished actor and producer John Houseman saw Ostro's workshop production as a fine vehicle for his newly created The Acting Company, a touring troupe made up of graduates from his drama division at Julliard. In October of 1975 the company set up shop in Broadway's Harkness Theatre on 62nd Street (now demolished), with a repertory of THE ROBBER BRIDEGROOM, Christopher Marlowe's EDWARD II, William Saroyan's THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE and Chekhov's THE THREE SISTERS.
Patti LuPone and Kevin Kline, who had roles in all four productions, starred as Jamie Lockhart and Rosamund.
Though THE ROBBER BRIDGROOM only played 14 performances during that limited initial run, LuPone's performance and Uhry's book each earned 1976 Tony Award nominations. The show proved so popular during The Acting Company's subsequent tour that the production was brought back to Broadway for a run of its own in October of 1976, this time with Barry Bostwick as Jamie and Coullet returning to the role of Rosamund. This return company recorded the musical's cast album and Bostwick, deemed Tony-eligible, took home the 1977 prize as Best Actor in a Musical.
Roundabout Theatre Company's THE ROBBER BRIDEGROOM will begin preview performances Off-Broadway on February 18, 2016, and open officially on March 13, 2016 at the Laura Pels Theatre in the Harold and Miriam Steinberg Center for Theatre (111 West 46th Street). This will be a limited engagement through May 29, 2016.
Wildly inventive and deliciously entertaining, The Robber Bridegroom is a raucous, hilarious, sexy theatrical gem with an irresistibly catchy bluegrass score.
